Me, pretending to be a game designer.

While I appreciate games like this that use gestures rather than a d-pad, I’m troubled by the fact that you’re obstructing the action a lot of the time with your hand. I’ve never played this on the iPhone, but on that device, it’s a little more forgivable. But with the iPads generous display, it’s a little harder to swallow.

Perhaps the controls could be redesigned a bit to accommodate for this. From watching the videos, it looks like the gestures are relative to the character’s position on the screen. So to move up, you’ll tap on a position that’s above the character. To move to the left, you’ll tap to their left. And so on. But maybe the motion could be based on a relative swipe on the screen below the action. So if you make a down-to-up swipe, you’ll go up. And if you make a right-to-left swipe, the character will go left.

These changes will no doubt affect the controls that are used for attacking. So I’m sure that something would have to be done with that, too. I’m not sure what, though. Maybe it could involve a two finger tap or swipe. Or maybe, if moving is something done less frequently than attacking, the moving gesture could be relegated to two fingers.

And if the bottom area is to be the new gesture area, I think it might be better to move the character closer to the top of the screen. Instead of in the middle, as it now is, the default position could be pushed up. This way, the gestures that you’re performing at the bottom won’t get in the way. The games chrome (the pause button, the energy bar, and the score) could maybe be moved to the bottom of the screen. They’re less important, and other than the pause button, I don’t think that they’ll be affected by touch. So if your hand covers these in the middle of the game, it’s less of a problem. This way, you’ll have maximal space up top to see the unobstructed action of the game.

All of this is just random thoughts I’ve had having only watched a couple of videos. The production values on this title are obviously high. I just think that the controls, reimagined a bit, would let you better see the beautiful graphics.

This is a popular title that’s known and loved by the people who’ve played it on the iPhone, so I don’t anticipate you’ll change any of the defaults for the iPad, if at all. But I think it might be nice if there was an alternate control scheme available in the preferences.

    Just a thought.

This is looking really great. I can't wait until it's released. I personally love the control scheme and wish more developers would be as creative. There's no reason to implement a control barrier like a virtual d-pad or something when you can interact directly with the environment on any part of the screen.
