Rage looks and feels leagues ahead of Aralon. The MBs and GBs are certainly not being wasted. You can't easily compare games based on content; you need to look at the engine technology and the quality of the assets. Then finish your games people. Beat them and get rid of them. Move on. See the rest of the gaming world. I hate the idea of limiting file sizes for games. It's almost 2011 for crying out loud.
Storage limitation is very different from a cap on the number of apps. Regarding the forums "constantly barraged by folks asking how to overcome the 11 page limit," I would point out that a forum "being barraged" is subjective, and that a few squeaky wheels always make issues seem more prevalent, similar to how a few globally distributed news articles can almost make it seem as if the world is on the verge of collapse. I do disagree that having mobile storage limitations is a "real issue," considering how reasonably sized most fun idevice games are, and considering how easy it is to reinstall most of them. Now, if not being able to store a bunch of the most recent games is an issue, just remember how much you're already saving as a consumer on non-physically distributed games.
No I get that, which is why I am questioning it little. It does look far better than Aralon don't get me wrong. The detail is immaculate. I would have just figured, even with it's detail, it would have been a smaller DL due to content that's all. But again, I am not complaining about the size, I have the game and it will stay on my iPod for a while to come. I was just curious how it's so big and yet a game filled with content like Aralon stays so small. Then again, the focus of Aralon is a lot of text based stuff and that has little size. I dunno.
It also bothers me how much space we REALLY get with our devices. I recently bought a 16 GB iPhone, but iTunes and the "About" tab in settings tell me I have 14 GB total space. I understand space is needed for the hardware and whatnot, but I paid a pretty price to get that amount, not to come up 2 Gigs short that I could really use. How do they solve this issue? Make it "18" GB so we see the full 16 we pay good money for. That's a big part of the space problem. I, too, would like a remedy to getting all the apps I want, plus preserving space, but with new developments in gaming quality, I've learned that sacrifices have to be made. All you can do is upgrade. Thankfully, I got a 64 GB iPad for Christmas, so it satisfies all my space needs for now. OP, if you still have a 2g, you should be well overdue for an upgrade. Go get yourself an iPhone 4!
The gigs you find missing are indeed software installations you have no control over getting rid of. Sorry
I would be all for deleting apps if iTunes saved game saves, and actually kept track of the apps in an organized way that Are on my account. Rage HD and Infinity Blade are proof of this systems weakness, in order to push the boundaries with graphics, your game needs to suffer in content. If Casual games with great graphics aren't worth keeping on my device due to the huge file size, hardcore games with massive filesizes are definite no goes. People use IB and rage as sone sort of measure that the iPhone is as good as the xbox 360, but that potential will never be reached at the huge file size costs. We will never get REAL games that look that good until devices can support 4gig and up game downloads in an easy way, and iTunes is rehauled for games. Until then the reality is quickly barreling toasted us. To people saying this issue affects only a minority. True, the people that talk about games on forums and fill their devices with all the newsest hottest games are a drop the bucket. But any half witted marketer would tell you that that small percentage is the hardcores, and the most important purchasers to please in order for anything(not just apps) to take off and sell well. Pleasing the hardcore audience is the highest importance in marketing. It's stupid to think that they don't matter.
That "small percentage" to which you refer is itself only a small percentage of the greater hardcore gaming populace, many of whom are likely still being wowed by the fact that these devices can hold gigabytes, console-level textures, and online matches in the first place. I think it's unwise to conflate app consumption patterns with appetites for games with large file size; know gamers who play hardcore games, and compete with the same intensity, but are content to consume such titles a few at a time, and not need to have them all accessible at a moment's notice.
A lot of people don't realize the installation and how much space it takes up and also the compression. When you download and install nova 2 it is 1.18 gigs I believe when the app is actually 700 mb. It is compressed and when it is installing, decompresses and becomes a lot bigger. Apple is going to have to figure out how to fix this. I thought 32 gigs was a lot but I only have 11 left and I lose a couple hundred mb a day. To clear things up, I was trying to say that people don't realize that's the apps are still compressed and it leads to bigger loss of memory. I don't know if what I'm saying makes any sense, hopefully it does.
I am highly anticipating a good solution for savegames in near future. perhabs this will be a convergence with savegame and gamecenter (ja I know then only GC enabled games will have this feature but this way apple will force the devs to use their gaming platform *lol*) anyways, something must happen and I see another good solution in an adaptive universal built which deletes the ipad stuff from a ipod touch as the mate above wrote, novas install download file is 700+MB and additonal to that size you have to have the 1.2 GB for the game so to install nova you need almost 2 GB free disc space, this is a pain for 8GB devices...
size As games become more graphical and advanced the file size will increase. Also some premium developer tools that can make 3D games are space hogs. There are some things developers can control and cant control.
I am actually thrilled that games are becoming bigger - 32gigs of space is more than enough for me to have 20-25 smaller sized games (under 50mb installed), a couple large sized new games along with my music and space for a movie every once in a while. Having larger games along with limited space* means I have to play the game to completion before I delete it off my device to free up space for the next big game. *I am not arguing that I wouldn't want to see a Terrabyte sized iPod Touch/iPhone though
The bottom line here is that this may be an issue, but it's not going to change at all. At all. The bigger the games, and the more graphically impressive the games, the bigger and badder they are going to be. Hate to sound like a dick here, but you're going to have to get over it or don't purchase the product. Yeah that will affect sales, but if you really want to play the game, delete some games tha tyou don't play anymore. I have a ton of games but only play like... 1/9th of them. If I had a smaller device, I would be getting rid of shit left and right to make room for some of the bigger more impressive, and longer lasting titles. /justsayin
exactly - management is key when it comes to playing games with large install bases. Hell I remember having to manage Morrowind, Deus Ex, System Shock 2, and SiN back in the day on a 15gig HD almost filled (on average 800mb-1.5gb free space depending on what I was playing).
I have to do some micromanaging to keep some of the bigger games installed on my 8gig iPod touch G4, but it's not that big of a problem. If a developer makes a great 2gig game that I must have, I'll just make room for it. And regarding getting a larger device: I've thought about it, and I don't think that's going to happen. I'd rather spend $200 a year for a new 8gig iPod than $300 or $400 a year for a larger one. These damn things should have slots for SD cards...
