I don't think this should be compared to Touchgrind, which no doubt was an excellent game, but as a non-hard core skater, I just couldn't get into the limited perspective. More reasonable comparisons would be to: 1. SK8 (video at Slide to Play) 2. Vans 3. Grind. Subscribe to the TouchArcade YouTube channel Subscribe to the TouchArcade YouTube channel
First real skateboarding game is what I should've said SZ. Touchgrind was (and is) cool for what it does, but anything else (Grind?) has been somewhat of a joke. I'm 28 now and no longer have time for it, but I skated for most of my childhood and got back into it really hard all throughout high school (skating wasn't anywhere near as popular then as it is now). Skating was my reason for getting up in the morning for a long time, and when THPS came out for PS1 I nearly sh*t myself. My point is that being a former skater myself, I also know what I would like to see in a real skateboarding game for the iPhone, but realistically, games for this platform aren't quite there yet.
With Gameloft's massive talent pool - I'm surprised they can't make a game as good as Tony Hawk on the PS2. That said - games on the App store DO NOT MAKE THAT MUCH. Unless you stay #1 for awhile. So you can't afford to put much into a game. I wonder if EA is realizing that now. Everything drops down after a week or two.
Looking at that dpad and orange buttons it looks more like the Gameloft team that does the sports games as opposed to the team that does Blades of Fury, Dungeon Hunter etc.
Well Gameloft can make a game as good as Tony Hawk on the App Store, if they put in the effort it would run fine (just like the Tony Hawk video we saw on a Jailbroken device months ago)
Very funny. Since sheckler probably wouldn't care if a game was realistic... as long as he was getting some cash out of it... Simple things such as the tricks of names and animations aren't that hard... a quick google search could give you all the correct information.... and with a few of the tricks they could just as easily take a frame or two out and it would make it look better... You see.. there are just a few things that all skateboarding games should strive to get right, and if they aren't going to do it then why try? as I said.. a quick google search would give you all the correct information as far as tricks of names go and animations. And a good camera angle is always a must in a game like this. If they zoomed out a tiny bit it would look ten times better. I'm not trying to be picky.. but from a skate perspective they still need to improve on some things.
Actually, I was being a facetious with that comment. The fact is, I appreciate hearing from somebody who actually knows the sport. And you're right; if they're going to use then lingo to add color to the game, might as well use it correctly. The camera angle issue is a bit more difficult to assess from that video -- I wonder how much of that was actual gameplay and how much was replay views, etc. In any event, I think I'll probably still pick this up, if only because the idea of an open world skating game in my iPhone is too good to pass up.
Once I get an ipod touch I most likely will as well. Like you said, it's the best there is right now... and I might as well enjoy it when i'm not actually outside skating.
This is not quite accurate. I'm not sure what your definition of "open world" is but Grind has been open world since it's release (in February). One of the levels (Urban City) has over 2 square open world virtual miles. Seems like Gameloft is a bit misleading in their podcast. Grind HOLIDAY SALE now 66% off!MULTIPLAYER mode is here!
