Well I finally saw Avatar tonight. I have to say - I'm deeply confused, and upset. Driving home I realized that it was a sloppy attempt at a "Dark Crystal" remake - where the Evil Corporation represents the Skeksi's and the Na'vi represents the Gelflings and Pod people (which look quite similar I must say) and without 1/10th of the personality of any of Jim Henson's characters. Sure the special effects were gorgeous - but I didn't really find any likeable characters, even Sigourney was a lackluster character. The tribal-ness of the Na'vi was soooo stereotypical, right down to the funny Cowboys and Indians calls. Is there anyone here that agrees with me or is this all in my head?
I got damn hated the tired-ass themes in the movie. HUMANS LOVE WAR AND HATE THE ENVIRONMENT!!! I left the movie with a headache, which I'm not sure was caused by the 3D or the constant eye rolling every time "stereotypical marine commander" spoke. If you look at the movie as a 3 hour long tech demo, it was outstanding... Anything else, not so much.
I saw it again for the second time... Good 'ol AMC 20! I really liked the movie, and even though the story was basically Pocahontas, the movie was more about the world than the story. Normally the enviroment is the canvas for the story, but this time it was flipped around. I liked the story the first time, and liked it as much the second time because I paid more attention to the world. And all you haters, it's already made $728 million, so expect more movies like this
You must have hated District 9 (and every other movie in the world, at that) too because that used the Man vs. Minority theme too. Every movie has a certain theme. They use it to convey a "message" believe it or not. I don't know what rock you live under, but look around. We're messing up our planet's enviroment, and we're in war. Hmm, that theme is starting to sound right isn't it?
Most movies take a much less ham-fisted approach to bashing you over the head with their themes with a cast of characters who are more than your classic stereotypical archetypes.
How do you possibly expect them to convey the meaning then? You want the general to be the good guy? Also, doesn't that mean that Jack Sparrow is stereotypical because it's a bad guy turned good? Sure seems so.What about Barbosa? Seems the same way... If you liked Pirates of the Caribbean more than this movie, you probably don't get out much.
i've seen the movie in 3D as well as standard. the 3D makes a substantial difference in the depth and environment, IMHO. there were so many subtlties involved. i was in 4th grade when the dark crystal first appeared. i dont see any similarities at all. as far as the stereotypical cowboy and indian calls? i think you have way overstepped your bounds. i am an enrolled schitsu 'umsh tribal member, with a rich and ancient heritage. our language contains words that do not translate into any language. so tell me, p'saya xa'ls, how exactly is that portrayal negative? i realize the Na'vi are not real, but you seem to have issue with their stereotypical ways. i'll bet you call us 'native american' as well. maybe i should check with you before i accidently do something stereotypical. i might offend some old white lady or something.
District 9 was one of the best movies I've ever seen. Avatar was pretty cool graphics put with a dime a dozen story. I honestly can't see why so many people like it. I paid eleven bucks to see it in 3D, definitely not worth it. Edit: and whoa flickitty don't get so defensive I can see where he's coming from, it's like they made the Navi just a stereotypical tribe
A stereotypical tribe?! How's that? Oh, I get it. They want to fight for their home... Obviously they are stereotypical! They should have just let themselves die... Stupid James Cameron.
??? How about the sounds they make, the language is broken, the way they worship nature, have tribal ceremonies, have no modern technology, live completely isolated, you know general tribe stuff?
The tribal stereotypes will always persist unfortunately. I do agree that it would be nice for a movie/director to think out of the box and make an alien race that has absoultely no connection to any human sterotypes or attributes...
For some reason, when I read that, I instantly thought of directing you to Star Trek (not the new movie, though).
I'll agree that the plot was so-so, but the visuals were astounding. I really felt like I was in another world. Overall a movie worth going to.
yeah but for 13.25 and 4 people plus pocorn?!?! 80 dollars to see a so-so plot. if i really wanted to see a new enviroment, ill actually go there. but i did love it. but i agree with Hodapp on the whole HUMAS LOVE WAR AND HATE THE ENVIROMENT stereotype. And the whole army commander being a tuff a$$, come on...sometimes its just like...wow....but it was goodish. I have to say, its one of those movies for the smart nerdyish ones (like ourselves) but not for the short attention spanned and easily bored and not so scitech star treky
Plot wasn't perfect, but def wasn't as bad as people were saying. I found it engaging enough. Totally agree though once the 3d glasses set in the movie was just incredibly immersive.
