I think its depends on how powerful the ipad 3 will be.
and i predict it would work decently for about 3 years.not a short time.
iphone/ipod would be shorter, only 2 years, its due to iphone/ipod is weaker than ipad. in terms of comparing 4s and ipad 2, same specification, but ipad 2 came out one year earler.

Thanks for everyones input here so far, I agree for the most part just wish there were more $10 or $15 or higher priced quality games. I'm not so big on the angry birds and cut the rope type games. I to have a console that I play Skyrim and Kingdoms of Amalur on but sometimes when I'm at work on lunch or breaks I really would like to see more deeper richer games. I loved Battleheart and Dungeon raid and all kinds of other games, I just wonder about upgrading my device so much to play these type of games. I have been hooked on IOS gaming pretty much since Dungeon Hunter 1 came out. (I was a little late to the party)

    Sorry, missed this post earlier.

    Short answer: no.

Why? Because I don't think it's worth it for a new generation of iOS hardware as long as the Vita gets the support it needs.. I'd imagine the next gen iOS hardware may only add increased shadow effects to my games and that's honestly something I could care less about when the Vita has that and much, much more.

I've also said this before, too, that I've already grown tired of the yearly OS upgrades that render a ton of my games critically bugged or unplayable.

So between yearly upgrades, unreliable OSs, and the overall market structure of the AppStore, I've chosen to move toward more dedicated waters. Not to say there aren't game's I'm still anticipating playing on my iPod, as I said earlier.

Not sure when $40-$60 became too much for gamers to pay for a console experience.

Haha. I know what I'm getting. I'll be paying $310 (plus tax) right off the bat for the hardware and 16 gigs of memory, which I imagine won't be as much of a pain as it is on iOS since most of my games will be physical copies. I've long asked for games that would cost more for higher quality on iOS, so the money for games isn't an issue at all, it's something I've longed for. Now with physical copies of games I can just sell them back for better games down the line.

Another thing I like to take advantage of with physical copies is I can buy the game used and if I don't like it I can return it within 7 days for a full refund. If it offers replay value beyond 7 days, I usually return the used copy and pick up a brand new copy on the spot for the extra cost (I find it better to support Devs that way honestly, even if I don't make much of a difference).

These are all things that can't be taken advantage of with iOS. And if I want cheap games, there are hundreds to choose from... They are called Minis and range from 1-7$, just like you'd find in the iTunes AppStore, same stuff.

So here's a simple breakdown of options for Vita games:

30-50$ retail games - can be sold back or bought used

10-40$ (downloadable) PSP games - some could be a bit cheaper but who's complaining

1-7$ Minis - basically what you get with iPhone apps: low budget games at low cost (NOVA, Angry Birds, Let's Golf <- got that for free)

    EDIT:
So yeah, litterally hundreds, if not thousands of games available, spanning a range that the AppStore couldn't reach in years. Just one more week. : )

Nodnod. It's true that this is really an apples-vs-oranges kind of debate. You can find single, deep games on consoles to rival just about anything IOS can offer. But at the same time, if you shop around with a $50 budget, you can get enough cumulative gameplay time with that to outlast the best console games. (The difference is, instead of playing one game, you're playing several dozen!)

In the end, it's all a question of what you like and what type of experience you're looking for. Having started from the 2600 era, there's very little out there that doesn't have a "been there, done that" feel to it for me. So I prefer the bite-sized portions of gaming over a single epic experience. Others will get a similar feeling of burnout by playing apps - "Oh, look, ANOTHER Tunnel Runner!"

The real question is what happens when they finally release an iPhone or iPad with a mini-controller and four buttons built in, and games start supporting that. Then the lines blur a little more, and the 3DS' attempt to charge $7.99 for Zenonia 1 and $11.99 for Risky's Revenge seems a little more ridiculous.

(Despite that, Risky's Revenge has sold at LEAST 3,000 copies at that price tag, so Nintendo definitely knows how to get sales by artificially restricting their marketplace!)

Not gonna happen though, mark my words. It's very strange to think but I honestly believe the days of buttons are just gone, at least for what is viable given mainstream "casual-approachable' devices. I can't say the same for console gaming (despite this Kinect and Move stuff, it doesn't seem like things are headed in that direction for a very long time, if ever...)

Mark my words, you'll never see an Apple device with more than a single button on it, and apparently that has set the trend for Android & Windows devices as well. I know, there's some devices with buttons, but the vast majority are touch screen or gesture-based, and developers who want to appeal to the mass market must design accordingly.

That's why I do get kind of perturbed when I see all the enthusiasm over things like iCade. Is is a neat device? Sure! Would I like one? Oh hell yes! Do I feel that supporting such a thing is a good route to a larger success? No way in hell!

I don't think Apple Will just sit there and let theyre hold on the portable market go to someone else. The release of the Vita will only strengthen the quality of games that Apple will look to produce. Even with all the freemium talk going around... I know there are atleast a few companies that will never go down that road. There is also alot more freedom with devoping for apple. I don't think Sony is going to take any risks with it's games. They're going to see to it that only quality games are release. Just looking through the upcoming games sEction I see more that I want to play than I Ever have.

In terms of upgrading, I learned never to upgrade again( this was upgrading the old way) however now that Icloud can pretty much do it automatticly there isn't a big problem. You don't need to buy each new phone or pad every relelease. I think you can wait atleast 2 upgrades and still be fine.. Or you can have phone and a pad and update one at a time..

This is a post I'm taking from another thread that asks about games(so kind of in the same realm o f this topic)

"I think apples on the verge of entering the home console market using apple tv and iPad/etc for a remote... Pretty much what the Wii u is suppose to be. The graphic capacities are there, Apple simply hasnt "made their move" yet. But expect to pay alot more money on the future for premium games. I think apple has already taken over handled next they go home console. I expect a pretty good console "war" with apple,Nintendo,Sony and Microsoft coming with the next gen...although it looks like freemium is taking over, I believe Apple will make it's move sometime in the near future..."

I still believe what I said to be true... I see apple slowly moving in on console territory

I personally don't understand why people think the Vita will affect Apples dominance on the portable game market. Nintendo didnt stand a chance.. What apple has been doing is something that's been Built up for years... The main reason for its success was Apple never really directly tried to take over. What happened came before Nintendo or Sony could see i

Finally I don't think Apple is in any trouble... Sure the Vita may sway away some of the more hardcore game players... But Sony has never tried to cater to the casual market and they aren't likely to win over anyone in that area, the iPhone will always be a source where media of all kinds can flourish. Its built around a phone and music and now almost everything.. Sony has always been about hardcore gaming.... So I don't see the Vita being any threat to apple in any way.

I think the Vita will strengthen the games on IOS simply because they are using similar ARM chipsets if nothing else, but I do think IOS is really losing it's way with gaming if it keeps going the freemium route you will never see anything better than what is about now.

I believe Vita is going to be very successful, the PSP was probably the best gaming device I've ever bought and physical sticks and buttons will always give a better experience not to mention it still has all the advantages of touch screen. Accelerometer, cameras, back touch panel.

With me I usually bore of IOS games after one brief play, with the PSP I'm still playing games like Metal Gear Solid Peacewalker, Gran Turismo, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, Valkryie Chronicles, Tactics Ogre. Vita will only improve on this.

I think with Apple not updating the iPod Touch people really are going to slowly abandon it for the Vita and I'll be among the first of them.

*Well, if Apple starts offering $40+ virtual content, you can count me out. I'd rather pay $60 for something tangible.

As far as the PSP, I could care less how awesome the games are. Whenever I want a console experience (which is not that often lately), I'll play a home console.

I had a PSP and I didn't really enjoy it that much--same with the DS. I like my iOS gaming, no matter how much the platform itself pisses me off.

What I will be getting is the new consoles. How much I actually play them = very, very questionable.

If iOS keeps sinking, it'll just push me to another mobile platform. Windows 8 phones look like they'll be pretty awesome. Maybe TegraZone on Android picks up.

Meet somebody with another iOS device!!!

I am playing video games for decades but started "seriously" with my iPhone 3G. In the meantime I have an iPhone 4 and two iPads (1+2). Almost all of my friends have at least one iOS device.

WE never had so much fun with a video game like the 3D arcade racer Asphalt 6: Adrenaline in local multiplayer mode on iOS. Please try that out with a buddy. No other console offers that exclusive experience. You can play it even in a houseboat on a lake without any WiFi or 3G connection.

We played that to death now and there is no successor in sight (okay there are some others like Real Racing and Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing offering that special mode but they are not that fun). The gamer's communities like tA missed that almost completely. The devs as well…

THAT'S a REAL social experience, better than all that online stuff. People are so overfed with information and the choice of 550,000+ available apps in the store that they are missing the real strenghts of iOS (besides compatibility and the update system)—they can't see the forest because there are too many trees:

Local multiplayer 3D racers and hightech music production software (video editing/effects will follow). No other mobile system offers this. Instead of concentrating on those precious features we are simply forgetting it.

    Bummer!

If apple would allow use of the volume buttons as game controls it would be epic. For games like modern combat you could have one of the volume buttons be to aim down the sight and the other for running or throwing a grenade.

I recently played a little bit of Gran Turismo for the PSP. The game received bad reviews for not having an official career mode, although there is a non-linear career mode, essentially. You race whatever events you want and the game keeps track. There is progress to achieve.

Anyway, this game has 48 challenges, 45 tracks, half that can be run in reverse, and over 800 licensed cars. Each track has 4 levels. GT Portable retails for $19.99. The graphic are decent. The physics are pretty good. People would fall out of their chairs if an iOS game were to offer this amount of content. And on the PSP, it only received a lukewarm reception. On iDevices, this "average" PSP game would be the king of kings.

for me, gaming as a whole is starting to get a bit stale, its not just the ios has run outta steam on releases. the quality of game being offered is increasing am certain of that.

however, as you age, you expect more and more. what was good 2 years ago doesnt cut it on technology of today. developers have to spend a good amount of time to fine tune their product before delivering, otherwise you run the risk of bad publicity for a half finished 'we promise to update every week' title.

to me a large percentage of games are simply reskins of older games, you can tire of the concept even if you thought it was incredible in the past. there are still some excellent games being released although they are becoming, it appears, less frequent.

one to look out for is legend of grimrock. it takes a very old concept (dungeon crawler) and brings in right up to date. looks amazing and cant wait for that. sadly its a rarity for me to get excited about games in general anymore. oh well.

Acid I agree, maybe what little time I do have to play games needs to be on richer fuller games from consoles and such.

My brother says u don't have to upgrade evey year but probably should every 2-3 years. Bc of the iOS updates, and processing power of your phone. Maybe Steve Jobs will make a home/console like ps3! :D

Can't see the batteries lasting 3 years especially if you are gaming, I don't think Steve Jobs will be doing much these days.
Your basicly right in the fact the hardware has barely improved in 3 years though that's the reason I'm still using a third gen.

Apple already tried to make a console and it was dreadful and probably the biggest failure in Video game history google up the Apple Pippin if you are curious.
