Sounds like turn based Battlestations. That had some tactical and strategic elements in it although it was a real time naval combat orientated game. A TBS version could be fun.
I would like to see a TBS game based on Gladiators. The setting could be set in the past (ancient Rome) or in the future (post-apocalyptic).
Wowsers, I think you guys have gone way off the map with some of these suggestions. Personally, I'd be happy with a WW2 TBS. Have you ever heard of Sabre Team Thomas? That was a great game. I think it had about 10 maps in the game, but each time you played it the baddies and your objectives (hostage rescue) were randomly placed throughout the map. It was isometric, with opening doors and flashbangs etc. It was pretty much like a TBS Rainbow Six game. Now THAT would be something. SWAT teams ambushing complex buildings rescuing hostages would be perfect imho.
TBSs are rarely successful in the app store. I don't think there have been any like these, so I don't see how they can "never" be successful. A quick and easy, stylish and charming 'cutesy' TBS just might draw more attention from casual gamers than a Fallout look-a-like. And yes, great idea. I would absolutely play Angry Birds Tactics. Name the price.
Yeah - a SWAT like game is also on my own list of potential themes. And I'm afraid frogtorch might be right. Realistic, classic themes might be too niche for something like iOS market to get noticed. On a different - but still related note: Would any of you be hobbyist 3d modeller and texturer by any chance? I am looking for someone (preferably TBS interested) to make some themed tiles for an experiment, and Magnus is working hard on campaign 2 art. Dont want to pull him away from that. If so, poke me with an email or PM /Thomas
Heh, I was making a joke about random animal combinations not being successful (which they clearly are). Cyberpunk > Steampunk.
SRPG > TBS High Fantasy (FFTactics, Tactics Ogre, Jeanne D'Arc) Steampunk (such cool design; I hate cyberpunk...) Psychological & Intelligent (If Sword & Sworcery were an srpg)
Trudy's Mechanicals, a steampunk tactics game was already announced last August. (currently in development for iOS)
Meh, I still think SWAT is the best idea so far. Storming buildings, using Rainbow Six tactics such as breach & clear etc, rescuing hostages, random placements of objectives & baddies. What could go wrong?
Can Mr Thomas Lund comment on the nature of the follow-up to Tactical Soldier now that it has been a few months? (It is worth a try).
Hey hey - thanks for resurrecting the thread. We are pretty far into production of our next title - which is still un-announced. So this is the first real info that gets out. We ended up for this next one to try to make something like "Call of Duty Tactics" and/or Ghost Recon Shadow Wars. You will control a squad of soldiers in various desert themed maps. The emphasis will be on configurable soldiers - you can mix and match a variety of proficiencies freely. So you can create a ghost medic. Or a heavy sniper. Or a close quarters combat engineer. Each will have their own skill tree and weapon tree to unlock as they gain xp. I cant give any more details just yet - one of the things we need to decide upon is the name. So until that is done we wont announce too much. But we got the entire core game working as well as networking, map/mission creation. But menus and balancing is still a to do. As the core we have used the Tactical Soldier code and refined it. Taken a lot of hints from what people liked and disliked (e.g. no more item drops you need to run over to fetch and you can have up to 2 weapons you can switch). Hope thats good enough as a teaser for now! /Thomas
I hope your game is a bit different than Ghost Recon Shadow Wars (so it will stand out), as Ubisoft is currently porting over their game to IOS in 2012.
We definitely are not copy'ing Ghost Recon. We have taken a few elements from their game mechanics though that we liked (return fire primarily) For one, our new game will leave it totally up to you to build the squad you want - and level each of the soldiers. So you do not have some pre-canned characters with certain skills already chosen. And the game will be full 3d similar to Tactical Soldier. But I'll get into more details soon! /Thomas
Its definitely going to be tailored to iPad (and possibly standalone PC/Mac/Web). With an attempt at getting the UI into iPhone size too without getting too small. But its most likely going to be 3gs+ only simply due to memory usage and the visuals. /Thomas
a ship-based one. You could have load of tactics, and different types of ships. A bomber ship, or something, a stealthed ship, and other such ideas.
Again, I have to admit that the zombie theme didn't get me the first time, and the cod theme isn't appealing to me either. I don't know why high fantasy is so damn appealing. Time mages, White mages, Black mages, Red mages! But I wish you luck on producing what will probably end up being a really good game. Dofus Battle, a tower defense rpg (like PvZ & FFT combined) should have been made into an srpg....
