not allowing you to play your own music

not making landscape games flip - yes blame apple for putting the headphone socket at opposite ends of the touch and phone, but make it flip and its now no longer a problem for half of your game buying public

No one conciously hates and deletes an app entirely because it has an ugly logo. But subconciously, they will have a lower impression of the app. So in the end, yes, you are far more likely to dislike and delete apps that have an ugly icon.

And even more importantly to developers, you are far less likely to purchase a game that has an ugly icon.

Think back to your favorite apps on the app store. I guarentee you that almost all of them have an aesthetically pleasing icon, polished main menus and clean graphics. It's how our brains are wired. Visual appence is a MASSIVE HUGE part of you deciding how much you like something.

Read up on the subject. 90% of the decisions we make and the opinions we form are made subconciously. That's what people mean when they say go with you gut, because odds are, you already figured out what you want before it even comes to your concious attention. And a big part of that decision is aesthetics.

This is something Apple is smart enough to capatilize on. They make all of their electronics and software interfaces very aesthetically pleasing to look at. Many other electronics makers that you have a much lower opinion of don't really prioritize aesthetics that much. Even though a recent showed that Asus, Toshiba and Sony laptops are actually more reliable than Apple's and Apple barely beating dell in terms of reliability.

In regards to the icon issue, think the icon should be reflective of the whole game. And usually is. Why do devs put all this work into a fantastic game and then loses focus and throw up a crappy icon?........just doesn't make sense although it happens. Imo, the icon is a very important part of marketing that should always be up to par for what the game it represents. And should be a no brainer requirement when selling a game.

hmm....makes me wonder how many fantastic icons are out there that hold crappy games?

If a dev wants to sell games, they need to make the game accessible to as many people as possible. If a developer lists the game's requirements as 3.1.2 there should be a reason for requiring that OS (other than general laziness.)

People should look at what the most successful publishers are doing and learn from them. Gameloft makes virtually all of their games compatible with the older 2.2.1 OS to maximize their customer base. A lot of indie devs just go for the most recent OS, and then :( cry :( when nobody buys their games!
Get a clue, folks. Not everyone upgrades to the most recent OS, and if your game needlessly requires it, you have only yourselves to blame if the game doesn't sell.

As far as the icon is concerned...yeah, a nice icon attracts attention, but not nearly as much attention as good reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations. I think the OP is placing way too much importance on it.

I think the icon is important. If it's really dark or ugly, I feel like deleting the game :) .....I will make a doctors appointment in the morning :) :)

Seriously though, I can't understand how a dev can spend time making a great game and then presenting it with an ugly icon. This is a pet peeve for me.

    Mine too.

Another pet peeve of mine is ugly names. One example is...

    Castle of Magic

Love the game, the icon is pretty decent, but the name is way too long.

On the iPhone, it's listed as Cas....gic.

Why make the game's name so long that it no longer becomes readable devs?

Another example is the app I have named...

    MUST.EAT.BIRDS

A.) Making it all capitals and seperating out the title with periods is extremely ugly.

B.) With a name that long, the name gets cut off and no one has any idea what the full title even is, much less how ugly the title looks.
