K so I'm really confused. How do I get the GameCenter app on my iPod? and what's GM? I want to register a username.
Help!!!!!! Is anyone else having all their music deleted after upgrading to ios4? Before I upgraded all my songs were done but afterwards all my music is gone...what do I do? All my apps are still intact so....idk!!!
Don't you have your music on your computer? idk about your music but just try and resync to get your music back.
GM is the Gold Master version of iOS 4 that was released to developers on the 7th. It is the final version with the only difference being that the GM version has GameCenter for developers to fiddle with. If you want it for whatever reason, install the GM version. If you already upgraded though, your only way to do that now is doing a full custom restore (shift+restore in iTunes) using the GM .ipsw instead of the one you downloaded through iTunes. Keep in mind that there's absolutely no guarantee that any username you register now will be kept when it goes live.
I don't download torrents, and I closed all my programs for this download. I usually have problems with other iOS updates, but this is needlessly ridiculous right now I feel much more comfortable if I get the download officially, though I don't know how to explain it, but I just feel more comfortable getting the file from iTunes, because I'm scared I might screw something up. May I ask what shift updates and shift restores are?
Hold shift and press the update or restore button on your computer and a window pops up where you can search your computer for an IPSW file to upgrade/restore with.
I checked out the link and it looks like it is coming from an apple download source. Just mouse hover over the links and if you have the links turned on in options, it will show the link in the bottom left of the browser. But I understand the possible concern. NA explained the other question.
Oh okay. Does it otherwise work the exact same as a regular firmware update? And the file is the exact same ipsw as I would have downloaded in iTunes?
It works exactly the same. The only difference is you're telling iTunes you'd like to pick your own .ipsw instead of letting it pick the one it downloaded for you. Almost. The only difference that I know of is that the GM version contains GameCenter, which doesn't really do anything right now.
Okay, this is sounding more and more great. If it is the GM version, that won't complicate things as far as future updates I get for my iPhone go, right? And it won't be any glitchier in the GM version than the one I would get from iTunes? Call me crazy, but I heard of a couple other people having that problem and all they had to do was unplug their iDevice, then plug it back in.
No. iTunes treats the GM the same as the officially downloaded version -- it doesn't even know the difference; I can't even update to the official release if I wanted to because iTunes already believes I have it, even though it never even downloaded the official release. But apart from GameCenter, GM is identical to the official release.
All right... well damn. This looks like my best option right now I saw a poll on Engadget asking people what problems they had with iOS 4, and one option caught my eye: Losing all contacts. If I lost all my contacts, when I restore from a backup, will those contacts magically come back?
