Thank you for everyone's help I managed to finally get it to download, and updated already. Oh my goodness, it is so sexy. The new animation when it's going back to the homescreen and everything... .bah gawd. I think after that initial horrible download experience, the iOS 4 update went really smoothly. It took maybe 10 minutes to do the backing up, updating, and restoring, I think. Either way, the actual install went quite painlessly. So I'm very grateful for that
That is kind of a good question. I went poking around but couldn't manage to find a way to actually remove the wallpaper from the home screen, even through settings. (You can change wallpaper through settings, but there's no option to clear it.) I suppose if it's just for the blackness of the background you could just make a 320x480 black image. If it's to clear memory ... then I don't know. Would be interesting to find out though.
It sounds like you have a 2nd gen device; home screen wallpaper only works on 3rd and 4th gen devices.
True. But that would require a restore, and I really don't feel like going to the bother for no benefit.
Is it just me, or are there no native wallpapers to change to? There used to be the earth, flowers, animals, landscapes etc. Now just a blank screen.
Not a happy camper after spending hours getting iOS4. Let's see. First it gave me an error saying I couldn't upgrade about 1.5 hours into the first time (reason code 21). Looked at Apple's website and followed a few of their examples of how to correct the issue (non was specific to 21, but to upgrade issues. Rebooted the computer, tied different USB ports, etc. It kept happening and the message says the only thing I could do was restore, erasing everything. So I did this as my last resort (my iPod was already toast at that point anyway).. I did a backup prior to everything thinking this would save the day. Well, about another 1.5 hours, I got through everything and less than HALF of my Apps were there. Not wanting to truely f'up my iPod Touch. I decided to just go with what I had, but quite a few of these games that didn't get restored were progress was stored (Chaos Rings, for example). And of course the high score games that I dont' care as much about save data were the ones that were kept. I began rebuilding my Apps (some are large) but it's going to be a while to get it into shape. And, I'm pissed about loosing save data even though I had done a backup. I tried going back to an earlier backup and it did the same thing -- only about half of the games showed up. This should not be such a difficult process. This was more painful than upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7. End rant.... but f'u to Apple for making things not so seemless.
Unfortunately, iTunes under Windows is more problematic than it is on the Mac. I frequently encountered errors when upgrading firmware in the past, but it's been smoother lately than in previous times -- the last few firmware upgrades I did went off without a hitch. I can't say for certain what makes the experience different for different people, as there are a number of factors, but it does differ and some people have a difficult time with it for a variety of reasons. Suffice it to say, iTunes for Windows is ... not very good. It's far more reliable on the Mac.
i think im gonna upgrade my ipod today. before i do i have a question. i always buy my apps through my ipod not using itunes on my pc. now to back up these purchases.. i have transfer them over. now my question is will a back up do the same thing? or should i transfer my itune purchases over first then back up, then install the update. thank you. chris.
I think Backup does the same thing -- it performs a sync, which transfers purchases anyway. You can always do a transfer purchases first and then a backup if you want to be sure though.
It's been stuck in the same place for over 30 minutes. This is the 3rd time this happend. The first and second time I had to abort and both of those times it was stuck for over 2 hours
