The iOS 4 Upgrade Help Thread

Discussion in 'Off-Topic Lounge' started by Mindfield, Jun 21, 2010.

  1. Did you follow the checklist in the first post of this thread to make sure everything is connected and ready? Have you tried doing a "transfer purchases" and a sync before trying a full backup?

Is it just me, or are most people that are having problems updating using the iPod Touch 2nd Gen or iPhone 3G?

I've seen only a couple iPhone 3GS issues, and the rest seem to be relegated to the iPod Touch 2nd Gen and iPhone 3G.

It could just be me, though

Don't abandon a backup if you can help it! You're blowing away the baseline backup which iTunes makes a delta (recording changes) of, and putting yourself back to square one!

Pick a day to be without your device, backup/update first thing in the morning (or just before you go to bed) then sync whenever that is done. If you've got a ton of apps on, prepare to be without it for a good part of the day. (Serious withdrawl!)

I haven't been able to give it up for the update yet - EA's sale just made that more difficult (and NOPZ;))

I'm doing this now, what's the maximum of waiting for it to restore you think?
I used about 7GB on my 8GB 2nd gen iPod touch. I just hope it works...

If devs had iOS4 for so long before its release, how come I've only had one update!?

  6. Depends on what that 8gb is filled with. (Apps with lots of files will trash copy times much more than larger MP3s and such) Could take a couple of hours, really.

Yes. I have done a transer purchases and a sync.

No, I think at least the iPod Touch 2nd gen has had much trouble updating.

That's what I'm doing today. I'm missing my favorite game! (I spend at least 12 hours on it on some days when I'm not busy) Actually, I have about 2 GB taken up in total, and it's still taking a good part of the day. :(

If I plug iPod into computer and sync, will I lose my folders made on iPod that aren't on PC?

(I know it's a silly, obvious question, but it happened yesterday, I'm just checking it's not a glitch!)

iOS4 orientation lock on the 2g touch

I can deal without multitasking. Actually, folders makes it much better for me. What I can't understand is where the HECK is the orientation lock?

I'm really really serious about this. Some programs like Olive Tree have one built in but many don't. HELLO we like to read and do other things laying down sometimes without a dumb orientation!!!!

I searched the forum and came up empty...am I just missing something? The lock is after all accessed through multitasking...

Answering your own question FTW

  11. iTunes can be a little glitchy sometimes, especially on Windows. My wife has lost her playlists a bunch of times. You shouldn't lose folders though. iTunes and your device basically make comparisons as to when each sync'ed action was done and cross-syncs newer over older.

Good question. I have a suspicion that it may not actually be possible on 2nd gen devices due to the lack of multitasking, and therefore access to the iPod controls that also contain orientation lock.

What happens when you double-tap the home button?

Crash issues with Mail and Safari (2nd gen iPod Touch)

After upgrading to iOS4 on my 2nd gen iPod Touch, I've gotten some issues with crashes.

    1) In Safari, some pages which I load now crash- including when I try to load these forums. I've never had this happen before. Maybe it is related to memory?

    2) I tried to add an email to my Mail under settings, and I found out that it didn't work. So I tried to delete the email, and it just hangs forever on "deleting mailbox" before crashing. When I try to go in to edit the Mail settings and erase the details for that email, it crashes. There is also some noticeable delay (5 sec at least, but longer for General and Mail settings) when I try to get anywhere in my settings now.

    Anyone have these problems?

    Music isn't backed up.

The issue is backing up many small files - which is primarily caused by apps. Look inside the structure of the backup folder if you want to see proof. And see how long it takes you to copy that over USB vs zipping (no compression) the lot up into one big file before you copy it. (Same for pictures - it always surprises me how long iTunes takes to process/sync pictures...)

Well, started restore about 3 EST, I'll wait until 10 or later, but I feel like the bar on the iPod hasn't move since like 3:30

Having some problems with my update. I have about about 240 apps on my 8gb iPod touch 3g, and I backed up my files before I downloade the update. Once the update downloaded (about 5-10 min.) it started to back up again. I let it go for 5 hours and not even an inch of progress was made. Why is it taking so long?!? Then I had an idea, since I already backed up my files, should I restore first an then update? Maybe it will be quicker since the iPod will be cleaned out right? Anybody else do this?

This is a bit after the fact, but to ensure that I got the OS installed without any possible hitches from apps, I disabled most of my third-party apps. From that point, the entire iOS4 installation took btw 20-30 minutes (including 3 movies and some songs). I then went back and reinstalled all of my apps. That process took much longer as I placed them in their categories ( let's just say that I have a tone of games). Anyway, hope this may help others...

It looks as though my problem hasn't been covered yet.

    iTunes was stuck like this:

and my iPhone was stuck like this:

I eventually found this helpful post (link:)

Problem solved. You can add that to the first post, Mindfield.

  20. It's possible, depending on how much other stuff you've got running. Try killing all tasks and running it and see if the same thing happens.

This definitely doesn't sound right. There shouldn't be any delays in settings, except when going into your carrier settings (on an iPhone) because it has to retrieve them from the carrier. Otherwise transitions to menu items should be more or less instantaneous. Try doing a restore and see if that helps; it's possible something got botched in the upgrade process.

    [/quote]

Yes, this is what takes the majority of the time. Flash memory is notoriously slow, so the more apps you've got, the longer it's going to take for a full backup.

That sounds like an awfully long time. But I suppose it's still possible if you have a lot of apps. Write operations in particular take a long time with flash memory (roughly twice as long as reads).

It's possible. Just like hard drives, flash storage can become fragmented as files are added, deleted and moved, which degrades performance. If you have everything backed up, you have nothing to lose by restoring and trying again.

Sounds like a driver issue -- Windows users get those most often when they don't reboot after installing the new version of iTunes. Didn't know something similar happened on Macs, too but good to know. I'll add this to the post, thanks.
