I always forget how much of a scavenger hunt the first part of this game is! Get the Crown so you can get the Eye to get the tonic to get the mystic key to get the nitro powder! And don't forget to go back through all of the places you've been to unlock all the rooms!

And this game is really hard on beginners. You get slammed with poison, paralyze, etc. And if you don't know where you are going it can take forever to get anywhere. I remember my first time playing I thought that I was almost done when I finally got through the canal.

I feel like I'm making good time. Got the Star Ruby in just under the three hour mark. Now just have to feed it to a statue so I can get a magic stick to open the real Earth Dungeon. Good thing Lich is undead! My diara spell is getting plenty of use with no other AOE spells!

Saber and Temper stack! I would have one of your wizards only job be to attack, and one whose only job is to cast temper on him.

I think this is the absolute worst party endgame. Even 4 White Wizards can do better with Holy and group defensive/healing spells! Good luck!

Forgot about Temper. For some reason I was thinking Red Mages didn't get it.

I read the article and found this interesting, never played Final Fantasy before. Didn't have a d6, at least nowhere easy. So went to the wizards of the coast and rolled their random dice generator. Got 13 (1,4,4,4). That meant fighter and three monks. Rolled it up.

For someone whose never played it, should I stick to Shaun's easy setup ( warrior, monk, white mage, black mage) or this rolled up group. Little challenge is fun but banging my head against the wall might not be good.

    Advice?

2:20 in. I'm level 18. I've been slacking off north of Pravoka. Time to go to the Marsh Cave.

If you've never played this before, do the easy team. Just know that about level 10 you should take away all the Monk's gear. Seriously. He becomes a god once he's naked.

    Thank you!
Are 3 gods not better than one?
Rolled up easy team will fool around tonight but will fully start tomorrow.

    Just saw this!

Now this seems pretty cool. I split my time among many game between console, pc, and tablets/smartphones but I must admit that I'll really have to try and play some Final Fantasy with you guys. Again, so cool.

And just like that I put in 40 minutes. Any idea how long it'll take me to finish the game?

The monk is my favourite character of the three melee classes, but you will find it easier with a white mage to heal and a black mage to cast spells to wipe out groups of enemies. You will absolutely be able to do it with your rolled team, though - just make sure you stock up on potions and all the status ailment fixes (antidotes, gold needles, etc).

Since you'll only be buying equipment for one of your characters, though, you should have plenty of cash.

I have another confession to make. Since I'm so fed up with having thieves upfront, I consulted a walkthrough to remind me how to evolve... Been about eight years since I played this, and couldn't remember. However, I do know that last time I played it, I think I got all the crystals BEFORE I did the rat's tail quest. I didn't want to make that mistake again! Heading off to find the dragon king now...

Without equipment my Monk does so much more damage it is insane. It is a shame that the game does a poor job explaining that. We really shouldn't have to "guess".

Just beat the Lich, party didn't do very well in the fight. I survived with 2 members at 1 and 11 hp after using a couple phoenix downs. The lack of heals is noticeable at this stage of the game.

I think my playtime is decent so far, can't really remember where to go from here so it should be interesting.

Day 5: Things look dire now and I blame the elves! With the fate of the world resting on the shoulders of my brave heroes, one would think that everybody would gladly support this world--saving enterprise. Chipping in some free spells or giving a steep discount is the least one would expect. But nooo! Everybody tries to cash in on the world's doom: Level 3 spells cost 1000gil in Elfheim, level 4 are sold for a premium 2500gil. And that's why my party nearly got killed!

During their exploration of the southern continent my party happened to stumble into the Marsh Cave which is teeming with flocks of Green Slime. Desperately fighting for their lives, I had to discover that nothing can hurt Green Slime, nothing except Fire that is! But with only one Red Mage being able to cast the Fire spell and the numbers of the enemy nearly without end, the damage the party took was significant. After an epic retreat to the cave's entrance, with the party's fate hanging between life and death, everyone was glad they brought the tent. Only to discover that tents are one--time--use only items. Blame the elves!

Limping back into Elfheim eventually, the heroes were greeted by a crowd of merchants in anticipation of new business opportunities.

Notable quote of the Day: "You see a gravestone."

Just finished the game, here's the final stats and party right before I defeated Chaos. Had a real difficult time at the end, but after leveling quite a bit, the Chaos battle was a straight forward 5 or so minute affair. I look forward to continue reading everyone's adventures on here. This has been really fun. I don't know if I've missed it or not, is anyone soloing? I'd love to know how that is.

Nice work! That must have been a real grind towards the end (pun intended).

I am finding things a lot easier now my two thieves are ninjas and can finally equip some armour and weapons worthy of the name.

Tackling the Hellfire Chasm now, since it was near the Dragon King, then I'll go get some new spells for my black and white wizards. Very grateful to have rolled a 5 and a 6...

After the chasm, I'll hit the Earth Spring, then I'll go after the last two crystals.

Lich is a lot more difficult with no fire spells. Diara and Diaga do damage, but with no other magic options and physical attacks doing very little, I barely managed to take him down after several tries. Had to drag the corpse of my white Mage around until I could reach Elfheim. Melmond is such a dump! No church! Not even a general store with a Phoenix down!

Hung out on the peninsula until level 20. Now it's time to push on. My guys feel like real slackers but the monsters dropped Great Axes and Ice Shields, so my Warrior is now a god. My wizards are stocked on magic and I have enough items. The thief is really dragging. Really starting to wish for a monk right now.

Decided to try soloing, here is my current stats, this is immediately after defeating Garland. We'll have to see if I stick with this or not, no promises, completing with 4 Red Mages was tough, but this is sure to be much tougher.

And my 8 year old son has decided to join in on his iPod. I've agreed to fight the dungeons as he does. So I'll be slowing down, but having a lot more fun. For the record he's running Fighter/Monk/Red Mage/Black Mage. I helped him power level and he's hitting the marsh cave at level 15 to my 20. Here we go.

And yes, this is his first time playing through Final Fantasy. I am a proud pappa.
