After dropping so much money on Holliday sales this year I was hesitant to spend the $7.99 for FFI, but this whole play along idea is just too cool to pass up. I've always wanted to try out a party with two black mages, so I went with that, backed up by a fighter to tank, and a white mage to keep everyone standing.
I love this! My 10 year old has been tracking my progress but has no interest in playing, he rather not play "a game for old guys". I look forward to hearing how this goes.
I didn't know this was a thing. Is this even doable? I mean have people beaten the game with just one character?
I honestly haven't looked into it, but Shaun had mentioned that someone should try it in the original post for this thread. It sounded fun, so I waited to hear from someone to try it, got sick of waiting, and so now I'm going for it. So far it seems possible, I level quickly, battles take longer, and I automatically die if I get paralyzed, so I'm saving constantly.
Solo Monk was such a thing that there's a walkthrough on GameFAQs for the NES version. Not sure about soloing this version, it sounds like a rough proposition since the final boss had that pesky 0 added to his HP. Good luck, coloncruncher! It sounds kinda fun, I would try it if I weren't going through a holiday sale backlog (FF Dimensions, Crashlands, Lost Frontier).
To my knowledge, the game is solo-able in its original NES form with every job except Thief. Thief could probably do it if he could survive long enough to get his class change, but Astos is virtually impossible with solo Thief. In the NES version, anyway. He might be able to do it in the recent versions, as the difficulty has been turned way down.
That's insane. And on the NES version as well... that takes some serious commitment. I'll go back to my current party of 4 monks happily. Jeepers.
I'm currently after the Fire Fiend and am taking my sweet time in the Volcano trying to gain as many levels as possible. I'm thinking I'll try and get my team of monks up around 35 before moving onward. So far they have been awesome, although the fight with the Lich was difficult as I'm trying to complete the game without any of the four monks dying in combat. I like all of them to level up at the same time. Although I didn't know that if one of your party members gets petrified in a fight and you don't cure them and the fight ends, they dont get any XP for the fight. So that sucks.
Yeah, I kind of like having all of my team level up at the same time. It makes it easier to grind because I'm aiming for one number. I wondered if they would be out-of-sync if one member fell or was petrified in battle.
Day 6: Yes! I did it! After yesterday's disastrous cave exploration the party decided unanimously to head back into the Marsh Cave as soon as possible in order to teach the Green Slime a lesson. In preparation the Red Mage, impressed by the effectiveness of his Fire spells, learned Fira and the White Mage Diara to get rid of all the undead folks found loitering in the vicinity of the cave. And then each one grabbed as many potions, antidotes, tents as he or she was able to carry without falling over. With much confidence the party set off to get to the bottom of the Marsh Cave ... and failed to even reach the cave's entrance. Nobody remembers exactly what and how it happened, but in their desire to use the first tent as efficiently as possible after having reached the entrance, the untimely death of the White Mage surprised all the others. Quietly, under the cover of the dark, the embarrassed heroes carried their dead friend back into Elfheim and requested a resurrection. After staying another night in the Elfheim Inn --- because, after being resurrected in FF1 a character is just barely alive --- the party made their way towards the Marsh Cave for a third time. After a very intense hour inside the cave system --- which the party entered as level 11 and left as level 15 --- the Green Slime is an endangered species, I guess. First the warrior died and was resurrected, then the monk gave in and was not. Though, the White Mage tried to cheat death by adding 50HP to the remaining zero. I liked the Marsh Cave scene very much. I think it is very atmospheric, very well done. Notable quote of the day: "Muwahaha!"
Isn't it ironic how all of these people want you to save the world, but you still have to pay them to get a good night of sleep?!
Watching as my son takes on the dark elf king. I haven't played yet today so I'm still at the marsh cave. Ahh... he just experienced a Death spell. But good news his Hasted Tempered Knight smashed the Dark Elf and he's off to finish the key quest.
About 4hrs in and at Melmond. Powered through the whole set of fetch quests for the key. So now I'm a bit ahead of my son who will likely finish the key quests tomorrow.
Also, if you haven't seen it, they did a speed run of Final Fantasy recently at AGDQ. http://kotaku.com/speedrunners-tear-through-the-original-final-fantasy-1791132002
My soloing is going slow but steady. I'm 7 hours in, just beat Lich. Attached my stats. This seems pretty doable so far. I am worried about the impending hp cap, and later the level cap, it may make Chaos tough....
Nice work! I'd be looking to get my rat's tail as soon as possible, otherwise you'll miss out on building up your MP from levelling. Those cura spells might prove useful. Oh, and I love the names of your departed party members!
