Well, that was fun! I know the iOS version has been tarted up and neutered several times over since the NES original, but it's impressive just how playable and enjoyable this 30-year-old game still is. I must say, I don't know how some of you guys cleared it in 12 hours or less. I had one very ill-advised jaunt in the Hellfire Chasm, where I was royally waxed by the mid-level boss, and engaged in just one load of grinding before the Marsh Cave, yet I still took just under 18hrs. Guess it helps if you know where you're going - it took me nearly two hours to get through the Chaos Shrine alone! Should I be fleeing more? Definitely want to check out that 4hr speed run video! Anyways, this experience has taught that I would be happy never to roll a thief again, and that, according to the slow scrolling victory text, there are four crystals for ever in my heart. So clearly I need to see a doctor...
Day 10: Today was a very dark day. All party members died. I'm equal parts heartbroken and embarrassed.
I've been around the same place as your party every day so far. Finally, today I ran into them. Or, I guess, over them. Unfortunately, I was hoping my party could shake their hands. But when we strolled up on them, their hands were full of sand and clutched tight. Sorry we had to meet like this. BUT, if it makes you feel better, my party tripped during an intense battle in the Earth Shrine... and they all fell as well. Somehow, light shone upon them as they woke up outside of the cave after that, clinging to life. All in all, today's been good though, as we're flying around now. So, if you'd like us to go pick up some Phoenix Downs and come dig you guys out of the sand, let me know!
13 hours 7 minutes and game clear. Whew. My son is right behind me with a lower time. So we will see if he beats his old man.
I had to level my solo Monk to 46 before I could beat Lich which does not bode well for The Chaos fight. Went straight to the Ice cave and now I have my Airship. Off to see Bahamut.
I've been thinking about you solo players. Is there any way to grind for elixirs? If the solo character can survive two hits, I was thinking you could alternate elixirs and giant's gloves (saber) for a dozen rounds or more, then start alternating attack and elixirs. Maybe throw in some white robes (the evasion spell) for good measure. Oh, and a hermes shoes (haste)...
That's what I've been thinking. Haste and Saber are my only hope but I have to survive long enough. I'm going to have to search the globe for every elixir and x-potion I can find.
Just had little wiki hunt. There are loads of elixirs and x-potions in the Whisperwind Cove - but, er, good luck getting to those! However, the lesser tiger apparently drops x-potions. Drops in FF are few and far between, though. Seems like it would be a real grind.
To have been seen in such a way! What else has a Hero of Light to endure? I hope our parties meet again under better circumstances.
Day 11: Was it a dream? Some prophecy? Or some nasty side effect from the Hi-potions nobody told them about? The heroes found themselves at the front of the Earth Shrine, unsure whether it was true what they remembered or some falsehood the Chaos had projected into their minds to steer them from their victorious path. Either way, in preparation for the things they guessed were laying in their future, the heroes traveled to Crescent Lake, again. There they bought more potions and even some level six spells for the White Mage. Then they checked out the last two harbors they had never visited before, at the east coast. As there was nothing interesting to be found here, there was only one way to go now: Back into the Earth Shrine! After they had passed through it, the door closed shut with a loud bang and could not be opened again. Only one direction indeed! And I still haven't got any clue about what to do on the fourth basement level of the Earth Shrine. Is there another way out? Or is there a key item to be found? Only one way to find out.
Thank you, just needing to get to Whisperwind cave to get potions, still worried it's not going to be enough.
I'm making pretty good progress now. After getting the class change I went to find a Ribbon to help with the status ailments and I was surprised that it only lowered my defense by 3 points. I can live with that. After that I went to Mount Gulg and beat Marilith with surprising ease. I'm starting to feel more confident about completing the game now.
Our girls are trudging through the Ice Cavern. Keep re-entering. Hopwfully they can find the right path at least soon. It's fun though, I agree with what someone said earlier. It holds up very well for its' age.
Gathered 1 crystal so far and already 19 days into the month. I blame Traps n Gemstones which made me beat it again after I found lost in one of my many game folders...
Day 12: Today my party surveyed the fourth underground level of the Earth Shrine. It was found to be exactly 100 paces wide as well as long. This surprised everyone! Based on long held beliefs the dimensions were assumed to measure one Common League, which --- as everyone knows --- equals 128 paces. Equipped with the resulting cartographic masterpiece, the party made it to the fifth underground floor without much difficulty. In the end this didn't matter very much, because the fifth floor is full of difficulties in any form and shape.
Well I struck out at Whisperwind Cove. The first boss stopped me in my tracks before I found any X-potions or Elixirs. It kept throwing an instadeath attack at me that my ribbon didn't stop for some reason. I did find one x-potion in Lifespring Grotto and now I'm leveling in the Chaos Shrine. Currently at 70.
