Just FYI, the reason it's not universal is that they had to completely revamp the UI for the iPhone/iPod version. They did a nice job, but it's a pretty significant difference between the two versions.
Many other games do and are still Universal. Doing as they did, the way GC async works, will now forever prevent iPad users and iPhone users to play togheter. Not to mention people with 2 devices having two separate apps and being forced to play with different people. I still think that it was a bad decision, unfortunately it's an irreversible one (as far as I know a dev cannot 'merge' two apps). For what it's worth, IMHO Apple should finally force everyone to make only Universal, Gamecenter enabled and iCloud saves supported apps and get rid of those split top charts (iPad-iPhones). And I do not talk about pricing, for me they could ask double the price on everything if that is a concern.
Glad to see async in the pocket version. Hopefully that will come to the iPad version soon. Still, since the app isn't universal, it will continue to languish mostly unplayed as I continue to enjoy the convenience of Carc and Ascension.
I found I weird bug. I have a nice Async folder...whenever a game inside receive a notification, a cool badge appear on the folder. Right now it contains Ascension, Carcassonne, Hero Academy. If I put Ticket to Ride Pocket, I won't get any more badge in the folder. If there is already a badge, it goes away if I put TTR inside the folder. The badge come back if I move TTR away. Any idea? IPhone 4S, latest OS. Loving the game btw.
I don't think chat is essential. Sure it would be nice but for the moment I'm just happy to see online which honestly I wasn't expecting at all. If they want to add some type of chat function I'm all for it but considering I paid $0.99 I think I got way more for my money than most other games offer.
This just went free. I'm surprised. Happily so. From what I know of the game (and will soon be able to confirm or deny ), this might be one of the best (as in fun, and possibly polished) async experiences for iOS.
The Async experience isn't as polished as some other games - Game Center async currently leaves a little to be desired. However it works well enough. And TTR is a fun game. I just wish they'd make the iPad version universal and add async to that. Hopefully that's exactly what they are working on, but who knows? One thing I really hate about Game Center is that there's no option to list people by their username. In-game it only shows their real name. I have a lot of GC friends who I know a lot better by username than real name, so I end up having to put 2 and 2 together to figure out if I'm sending the invite the right person. LOL.
Yeah, I just discovered it is powered by Apple's async APIs. And they are, frankly, spartan to the point of head-scratching confusion, with limitations such as no custom notification sound, chat messages can only be submitted as you end the turn (GC just piggy-backs a chat message on the end of the game's turn data), and no easy way to use informative text strings for push notifications. A durned shame, I was hoping Apple's new GC additions would do much good for async gaming.
What's new Discover 3 new ways to play on the US Map with the 1910 Expansion. 10 new achievements to unlock. new map can be bought as iap.
Awesome, I was wondering if they planned on adding the expansions. This is great news...looking forward to additional expansions in the future.
What's the price of the 1910 expansion? That is a good tweak to the base game, but it's a stretch to call it a "map". Still, I'd always pick to play with the expansion than not. It improves the game. But I'm wary of buying the expansion because I'm wondering if they are going to make the iPad version universal, or how they are going to allow for asynch play between iPad and iPhone? Maybe they are going to drop GC asynch and roll there own. That would be preferable anyway.
Expansion is only $0.99. Crunc, I doubt it will be universal, they said they had to rework or redesign the game for the smaller screen so I'm willing to guess there will also be two different versions of the game. Unfortunately this likely means if the iPad version ever gets asynchronous online like the iPhone version you won't be able to play cross platform.
Or they could roll their own asynch, I think, and that would be greatly preferable anyway. GC asynch is pretty crappy. They could make the iPad version universal. It might make it larger (file size), but it is definitely something they could do. If they aren't going to do that then they really need to can the GC asynch and make their own so we can play iPad and iPhone. As it stands I'm playing the iPhone version in 2x on my iPad. Also I don't really see where the iPhone interface wouldn't work on the iPad. It works fine at 2x, it's just crappy looking.
I couldn't agree more about the GC online. I really don't care for it and when playing asynchronous games with friends all GC games take forever to connect so I can make my move...well maybe not forever but considerably longer than non GC games like Carcassonne or Samurai.
This may be a silly question but how do I get the IAP? I can't see where the option is to purchase it
You need the new update. Click "Play" then you will be taken to the select screen. Just pick the expansion and it will say buy for $0.99.
this update reminded me that i HAVE TO START THIS GAME. i bought it a while back, and for no good reason, never started it. i finally did, and ended up playing about 5 rounds before putting it down. and i bought the expansion too, playing one round of big cities. i'll be getting the ipad version when i get the next ipad. really fun, really easy to get into, and really hard to put down.
It's certainly worth picking up the expansion; it almost seems like stealing, given that picking up the physical board game and 1910 expansion costs over $100 in most places here, while the app and expansion only set me back $2.58 in total. The expansion includes three gameplay variants, with the "mega" variant seeming to become the new default setup for most people, as it uses all the tickets from both the original game and the expansion to provide a wider, less predictable range of routes. As a reminder for those seeking a challenge (and don't have a live opponent on hand), bear in mind that the lowest-level AI characters won't actively try to block your progress, and will tend to draw tickets without much thought as to how likely they are to complete them. The higher level AI characters will take these factors into account more often, which makes them less easily stymied, and more fun to play against.
This is a great game and works great as a mobile as a game can be completed fairly quickly. This, Carcassone, aMazing Lab, and Catan all on my phone. I'm a happy bunny!
Which are the higher level AI characters? Are the new gameplay variants much different? I would have loved another IAP map
