it does kinda matter, especially if there is unaccounted-for votes filling the poll. I'm not saying this is what's happening but we've seen it done before plenty in the Game of the Week threads and it was taken seriously, it stands to reason it could be happening in the Game of the Year thread. I think it would matter a big deal to the real winner (in the hypothetical situation that the polls are rigged...) if they could sport the 'TA Users GoTY' stamp. Not only that but doesn't the uncertainty take just about all the 'fun' out of this thread. To me it does. Oh well. Just seems weird but whatever.
I don't really wanna compare any of the games to each other as far as votes go, so all I'm going to say is that Anomaly definitely deserves a lot more than it is getting. To all the Junk Jack fans, it does.
This thread should be helpful to all the people who received a shiny new iPod for Christmas. Especially if you are this kid: Subscribe to the TouchArcade YouTube channel
The game of the weeks are taken seriously and sometimes they were set up so we could see the voters and sometimes not. So every week it was what it was. Some weeks we found out about devs campaigning for their game in other places, some weeks it was nice and easy. We thought this would be set up publicly but it wasn't - what can we do now - nothing, so that is what we have to live with. The whole poll system is imperfect as you never know what pool of people actually take the time to vote. There could be a million readers out there that like a completely different game but if they don't voice their opinion we will never know. There are game threads that sink cuz the people that like the games don't write up anything. These things are always going to sway to the vocal majority. And personally to those that say the zero posters shouldn't count - I think the join date is more important than a post count. I would much rather allow a vote from a zero poster who has been here for months and perhaps made the account in order to vote for the polls, or see attachments or whatever, than someone who JUST joined this week and then voted. Just another reason why post counts are meaningless. If you made it so only senior members votes counted then someone could easily rack up the requisite amount of posts by just going to each thread and making a two word - cool game - comment. What good is that but acid on the eyes? Polls are not perfect, we just have to hope that they fall within a margin of error and that is what people need to accept. We hope the 300+ people that voted represent a cross section of the TA community. Maybe yes, maybe no. Again, there will always be unhappy people with the result of a poll - in this case for the one winner, there will be 9 losers. Which means there will be necessarily more people unhappy than happy. I begin to wonder after all this if polls are even worth it in the end - games of the week, games of the year, game of the month, game of the hour - they will only bring headache and strife.
I believe the answer lies in Pixbits own forums (which are fairly large and active for a forum dedicated to a single indie iOS game). There is a thread: http://forum.pixbits.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1707 which is funneling it's community here to vote.
I found that just a few hours ago too, but if you look closely at the post times, just 3 hours after that thread was started somebody posted that it was already in the lead. So that thread probably didn't do much.
Sounds to me like u actually want the polls to be erorrized. Maybe less work on the Mod's part, idk. In fairness, would it be appropriate if a public poll were created asking 'What Was Your Vote for GoTY - 2011?' Seems reasonable. Or is that too much of a headache for the guys behind the scenes?
The secondary poll may not get the same amount of votes but at least it would give an idea of what the legitimate members of this site voted (by "legitimate member" I mean the people who post here, ask questions, give answers, etc. 'Non-legit' would be the people who come with a line of others just to vote for one game, who would stick out like a soar thumb in a public pole).
Why is it that everybody thinks Junk Jack is winning because of cheating? If people can cheat for Junk Jack, they can cheat for any other game on there as well. Seriously people, just because the results are surprising doesn't mean they are wrong. Junk Jack is a very well made game, tons of fun, and lot's of people like it more than the others, me included. So just because you don't agree, does not make the results invalid. You are entitled to your own opinion and in the end it won't change which game you like the best, it's just a tally of which game was liked by the most people. What would anyone actually get out of cheating anyway? There is no prize to be won, it's just a stupid little poll in a stupid little thread on one site, nothing more. Please, everyone, just lighten up, stop complaining, and just sit back and see who wins
Oh, that's how it made it onto so many of the top staff picks. I was wondering why since mid-November isn't even close to the end of the year. But yeah, it's one game I just couldn't ever get into, even after all the updates. Going to try again. Syncing it now.
I'm really wondering though. Why wasn't this thread made to show the poll participants? Just under 24 hours to go.
The thing is who is going to want to rig the poll then the games dev? I'm not saying it is I'm just saying who else would? If it has been rigged by a dev them that would be their own fault.... Maybe TA could find out if any of the new users have the same IP?
Junk Jack is probably the only game not made by a big development team in the poll. That could be suspicious as it has become so popular in a week.... Just is a tad unrealistic...
Logically Junk Jack's winning is possible, as well as Jetpack Joyride, because they are unique among the candidates - they are the representatives of casual games. For Junk Jack, it is the only crafting game in the category. Those who like Minecraft, Eden, etc will definitely vote for it. Having 62 votes among >1500 posts on its thread is likely possible. So did Jetpack Joyride in the casual/puzzle game category. As for other games, they are kinda heavy games, people who like shooters will be split into MC3 or Dead Space, those who like adventure/RPG/action can be confused to pick Mage Gauntlet / Battleheart / Superbrother's / IB2. I'm sure that those who like Anomaly Warzone Earth will eventually like other games better. The choice become harder for all of us (including me) who own and play most of the games mentions above. In the end, we will pick only one and if we make an order, Junk Jack probably in the bottom, but that doesn't mean it's also in the bottom list of others. It's a fun poll and the result might be surprising, but hey Junk Jack is a good game too.
Junk Jack was popular for much longer than a week. Apparently most of the people posting in this thread weren't paying attention, but the game has had a serious following ever since it's release. Tons of people who have played it love it, and I think it deserves game of the year because of how fun it is and because of the huge achievement from a small indie team. Again, everyone is different, and it's not necessarily the most popular games that will stick in people's minds when they come here to vote.
Would have been good (and easy) to change the option to show who voted for what. Call me paranoid but be interesting to see if a certain game has lots of votes from people with 0 or 1 posts. Or worst case scenario it would stop any paranoia if you could see who voted for what.
