This app is old but has a lot of good reviews so I was thinking of getting it. Anyone try this app or know if of others? pluto6 Well-Known Member Jun 21, 2009 5,837 3 38 Military #3 pluto6, Nov 15, 2014 I have not tried this, but most of these are going to have a variety of well known songs that will allow you play the chords and make some music. The chords that are actually being played in most songs are going to different, because most music is much more complicated. For a beginner these work fine. The advantage of tabs are they show you where your fingers go on the guitar neck. The disadvantage is you don't learn music / notes, so it is good to try and learn something about music as well if you are learning it for more than just casual / recreational playing. This app looks pretty reasonable. Has the chords, the tabs, shows chord diagrams, and it looks like it plays the music faster or slower so you get an idea of what they sound like, or can play along. The IAP looks like this could be a money trap though. Hard to tell what is in the actual app vs. what you need to buy in IAP If you love playing and start advancing, get iReal Pro as an app to practice with. It is completely inappropriate for a beginner, but is excellent once you are on your way. Good luck. somedumbgamer Well-Known Member May 4, 2013 709 0 0 #4 somedumbgamer, Nov 15, 2014 Last edited: Nov 15, 2014 Thanks for checking this out, Pluto...and for all the info. Just waiting for my wife to leave so I can start learning. I don't wanna practice with her around. I was the same way as a kid and would make my parents go out in the yard when playing the piano. Planning to check out some YouTube vids too. Edit - just found this which looks like it will be helpful to learn the chords. Some youtube videos will probably be OK as well. I am pretty much self taught guitar and bass - bass is my main instrument. I will tell you that getting some lessons would probably be a good idea if nothing more than learning some proper hand positions, particularly for the chording hand. Like many things, learning the basics wrong actually makes learning slower, and ultimately impedes your progress because you have to unlearn all the mistakes. If you have a well respected guitar teacher (you don't want some person that has only talent - teaching is significantly different than doing), you can take a few lessons on some basics - practice a bunch, and then take a few more lessons to help refine - rinse and repeat.. the key is a good teacher, and a good teacher should encourage you to mostly learn on your own - they can help with the difficult parts. Get yourself a reasonable instrument - you don't want something that is so cheap it is falling out of tune with every strum, or the intonation is so far out that chords never sound in tune. Music is a wonderful thing and something you will always have. drelbs Well-Known Member Jun 25, 2009 11,201 7 38 #6 drelbs, Nov 16, 2014 This is a great app for looking up songs / chords / tabs, but I have no idea how good the lessons are. My favorite is being to AirPrint songs. I'd highly recommend GuitarBots as it's free. A little cheesy in the music department, but free. Reddit.com/r/guitar has a ton of links for learning guitar. pluto6 Well-Known Member Jun 21, 2009 5,837 3 38 Military #7 pluto6, Nov 16, 2014 Thanks fir chiming in @drelbs. What is your take on learning completely on your own? I have seen many people struggle becuase they learn poor fingering, hand position and it holds them back. Maybe the virtual lessons are goid enough these days somedumbgamer Well-Known Member May 4, 2013 709 0 0 #8 somedumbgamer, Nov 16, 2014 I ended up buying the lesson IAP for 6.99. It is pretty rad! Started off teaching the anatomy of the guitar. Then, how to properly hold and strum. After that I learned hoe to tune and now I'm learning how to read tabs and the basic A chord and A minor. There are YouTube links within the app to get additional info by watching the instructors videos. I can totally learn the basics for $10. I think I'll take a lesson or two in a month or so. Having fun so far pluto6 Well-Known Member Jun 21, 2009 5,837 3 38 Military #9 pluto6, Nov 16, 2014 Good for you. Hopefully you won't be too shy in a short time to play in front of people. I have been playing for many years, and it is something I hope to be doing up until I leave this earth. Music is one of the better inventions that humans ever came up with IMHO. somedumbgamer Well-Known Member May 4, 2013 709 0 0 #10 somedumbgamer, Mar 19, 2015 Hi - just a quick update. I've really been having fun with the guitar! So much that when Im not playing, I'm studying theory. Only bad thing is I don't really play video games much any more, which probably isn't a bad thing...I can finally admit it's really a waste of time, like tv. I could only go so far with that app and YouTube and have been taking lessons every other week for a couple months now. My family is pretty happy I've found something I really enjoy and it helps melt away the daily stress with work. Yesterday, they kicked down the majority of cash for a new Taylor! Went and played a bunch of guitars at GC and can't wait to get it next week. I'm feeling more confident and have even played in front of them. Who knows where this will go, but I hope to get very good, eventually. It's a journey! Thanks for the encouragement, Pluto!
