Clear personal bias: I'm the author of Combination (Combination Lite: http://www.itunes.com/app/CombinationLite ). Personally, I think not enough publicity is given to original puzzle games on the iPhone. Other than my own game ( ), I feel one of the best examples in this area is Subway Shuffle. I'm sure there are many others. Of course, such games are harder to show off and discuss, because you can't just say "Oh yes, it's Sudoku" or "Oh yes, it's Sokoban". I feel the top of this post on this thread show this attitude, showing the best clone from among hundreds of options, rather than showing off some original ideas. Not that I'm saying such games aren't fun, but too many puzzle games on the iPhone are just cloning some else's good ideas, often (even worse) without referencing the original game).
Totally agree - but what can we do about it? Genesis - total rip-off of Auditorium but what will happen? Nothing. Other examples are not difficult to find. It seems to be the one that catches the imagination, maybe the one with that indefinable extra something which makes it stand out. But until Apple help devs with some sort of process this will never end. 1. Wait until a game has been out just long enough to off the immediate radar. 2. Release a variant with the same code and different graphics (Blocked followed by many derivatives) 1. See new genre (Flight Control) 2. Rip it unashamedly.
Okay, so here's something. All puzzle games are not the same so let's say someone created a "First of it's type" thread. Example: Blocked would be in there but does that stay as the only entry or should it also have honorable mentions for clones? Zen Bound would be on it's own. I have no idea which TD game was first but as that too has been bettered (according to some) should they be listed? Tetris clones.... but the first was a clone anyway. 'Drawing' games Word games and the list goes on. Does a 'First' or 'Original' thread have any merit? probably not. So just like there is always a first of everything it does not mean that will be the most successful. Which for many games and developers is a shame. But a forum like this does have some power to highlight - so should that happen and if so, how?
I don't see why people are so bothered to work out what the FIRST game of a type was released. It's often not the best one - Flight Control, Fieldrunners, and the games that follow it are usually more polished and more fun. Visit my thread on "Best of its Kind". I'm trying to do exactly what you're saying about compiling top games from every genre.
Boxed In, a pretty game Sokoban game with a decent amount of levels, is free for a limited time: http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=314464100&mt=8
Saw a new rush hour game called Blokt with a lot of 5 star reviews. Kind of guessing some may be shill reviews, since the reviews are GUSHING to a degree which is odd, but I dont know how to check on that. It looks like rush hour with only 160 puzzles, with the only plus feature talked about being a leaderboard for each puzzle tracking time to solve and total moves. Still, if the reviews are real, this may be the most polished rush hour game . . . which admittedly isnt saying a ton, since none are really much more then puzzles plus levels. Need someone to TOFTT!
[app]Pentanimals[/app] A version of Zentomino for kids or people who like something more cute. [app]Form[/app] Form has gone unnoticed. It's a physics puzzle game where you place objects to guide a ball to the end of the stage. The keys need to be collected along the way to open the way to the exit. The three objects or tools (ledges, warp boxes and gravity-inverters) that you need to place can be dragged around and rotated. The graphics and controls are pretty good although the 3-tries-before-stage-reset seems redundant since I don't notice any scores. (Who cares about scores in games like this? Not me I guess.)
[app]Geared[/app] Yet another pick-up-and-play puzzler. Currently has 80 levels, which is a real steal at the current price of 99c. === [app]Alchemizeā¢[/app] Yes I know it looks like just a match-3 game. But seriously, this actually a puzzler with match-3 mechanics, requiring strategy and careful thought to progress to an end goal (gold), not just matching 3 or more for points. No harm if you still think this not worthy of getting added.
[app]Copy Cat: A Painter's Puzzle[/app] A nice puzzler where you mix colors and play with shapes to achieve pattern objective. Basically, try to get the picture on the left using the primary colors and the stencil shapes. Launch price of 99c seems pretty reasonable for 35 puzzles, considering that it does get quite challenging after a few levels. Discussion thread here.
Let's add a fun game with AGON leaderboards, similar to Alchemize, but more intuitive: [app]Cash Machine[/app]
[app]Zuigen[/app] A puzzle similiar in gameplay to Bobby Carrot where you need to collect diamonds and manipulate objects on the map to solve it. 100 puzzles in various difficulty packs, at a release price of 1.99. Link to discussion thread.
