I figured this one out - I got an error that the installer could not find Quicktime.msi, then iTunes.msi.

BTW - I have Windows XP Professional so the fix may be different depending on your OS.

I found that apple support forums had a lot of these problems (dating back to 2006!!) but never had them answered. Finally stumbled on a forum that suggested using Windows Install Cleanup Utility (download here). This ONLY removes the programs from the list of installed programs. But, bottom line, it allowed the new iTunes / Quick Time to install. O/W I would have been screwed getting iPad apps!

Anyways, if others know better ways to do this, please chime in.

I also had removed all the startup programs, and iTunes references and Quicktimes references in Task Manager, and shut down and restarted several times. So, this is the result of a couple of hours of trial and error - just trying to save someone else the headache (all cured now) that I went through this afternoon.

Yeah - when I went to install the new version and you get a window that says the uninstall can't happen - it also means the new install won't happen - no updated iTunes, no ability to d/l iPad apps... Yeah it really sucked - but there is always Google- and that ultimately worked...

    Australia, mate!
Well, my problem is worse. I can't install anything onto my computer. Whenever I try to, an error message appears saying 'Unable to access network location %APPDATA%/'.

Need to comment on my d/l as well.
Acted really strange like it was trying to get its legs or something.
Can't really explain it but went through some birthing pains of sort.
At the moment it seems to be working alright.
    I've got Windows XP btw
