Judging from the possible action in the screenshots, how about this for a control scheme:

You get an iDracula style control wheel/ Hero of Sparta joystick on the left side for movement. On the right side you have one Action button. Tapping the button makes you slash, while swiping out from the button does a special attack, like an dashing stab or overhead strike. Holding down the button makes you block.

So you can run up to an enemy, hold down the button to block his flurry, then tap tap tap swipe to do a Devil May Cry style combo.

Later when you level up, you can choose 3 of all the different special attacks you've acquired, and assign them to swiping up, across and diagonally from the action button. So

Tap, tap, tap, swipe UP = slash 3 times, do an overhead smash
Tap, tap, tap, tap, swipe diag = slash x4, knockaway slash
Tap, tap, tap, swipe across = slash x3, rushing stab

    Etc
The screenshots where he fights the red dude might be a subboss/ boss fight. Same thing applies except the camera is closer. Same controls to move and fight. Dodges and parries would be one of those specials you can assign to the swipes.

As for the screenshot where he has a gun, that means he shoots, right? Well the action button autoshoots whatever you're facing until you get within sword range.

    Or...

    ...the backgrounds could be pre-rendered.

Has anyone actually thought of that?

People are comparing this to DMC...but when I look at the screens I think more along the lines of, say, Onimusha (the first one) and the older Resident Evil games. Real time polygon characters over pre-rendered backgrounds.

Pre-rendered backgrounds could account for the detailed textures and geometry that some feel outside of the realm of possibility on iTouch/Phone.

    Because, y'know...

...this wasn't possible on SNES without pre-rendering:

Nor were the backgrounds in the pre RE4 Resident Evil games.

If it were the latter, they'd have a LONG wait ahead of them. Fact is there is no real "2nd gen" iTouch/Phone. We're still, in terms of hardware, in the same generation of hardware. Yes, the "2nd gen" iTouch has a higher clockspeed, and there are some minor differences between the current devices, but in terms of CPU, GPU, RAM, etc., they are largely the same and thus the same generation of technology.

When there's a vast upgrade in terms of CPU and GPU then and only then will we be in a "new gen"/"next gen" of iTouch/Phone as a platform. I'm talking replacing the ARM 11 and PowerVR MBX-lite with a newer ARM CPU (Cortex A8 or A9) and a PowerVR SGX based GPU. And Apple is not going to go for a vast update of the hardware for a couple of more years.

So-called "3rd gen" of the current iTouch/Phone "gen" will be a MINOR update just as we have already experienced. Anyone who states different has absolutely no grasp of how to make money.

Hey guys, I was just wondering about this through the whole day. What if the developers were Bethesda? Chillingo is being very quiet about the developers, and someone also posted that this game kinda looked like Elder Scrolls.

I'm probably totally wrong, but just a thought right? Don't kill me for saying this statement :p

It is odd that the developer of such a potentially Appstore blockbuster remains unnamed while Chillingo gets the news spotlight. Each website including Toucharcade got different pictures independently from one another, yet none asked Chillingo who the developer is?

Although I don't know if it is Bethesda, art doesn't look like their style.

Yeah, I'm really curious on who the developer is. Is Chillingo deciding on developing games, or is this just another game that they're publishing? Weird how no they're not saying ANYTHING about who's developing and whatnot. Shouldn't they atleast give credit to the developer?

  7. I have a feeling this game isn't going to be quite what everyone is expecting.

trust me, people have definitely thought that these could be pre-rendered backdrops. however, we don't know anything as of yet. whether yay or nay, there is some impressive work going on behind the scenes. the PowerVR inside of the iDevice is quite powerful and from a purely rendering standpoint should be about on par with the Dream Cast except that it renders at much lower resolutions and is fine with 16 bit colour as opposed to 32 bit.

PowerVR can also take great advantage of tile-based rendering to display only visible graphics rather than the entire scene. if chillingo secured a very talented team of programmers, then i don't see why with a bit of magic, it would not be possible.

Maybe we should ask some Toucharcade site member like Arn to follow up on the dev's identity. If they remain silent, we'll know they were probably asked not to reveal it at GDC, making it the strangest NDA ever, especially for a mobile game.
What do you think it is, perhaps it's not a fast paced action adventure game at all? But the pictures released seem to indicate exploring an area with fighting, more emphasis on swordplay that shooting.

Is that a lever I see? Hopefully this game has just as intuitive controls as Casper.

Thanks for the screenshots arta, just added them to the front page. There were like 3 screenshots from some website I don't know that didn't show up anymore. They're represented with stars and some other words after it, but no picture. Weird, huh?

Yeah I know, I'll put them on tinypic.com so you can get them back on the front page. In the meantime, here's a vid I made with the pics:

pre rendered back drops and 3d characters, in the same way that the orginal RE was done. Still looks nice but nothing special ( graphical )

If they are prerendered, I wouldn't expect so much aliasing on the screenshots. IMO prerendered seems unlikely, but it's very possible that the screenshots have been doctored somewhat to make them more appealing - see also what Sony did with Killzone 2...

If they really can achieve this kind of graphics in a free-form 3D game, they must have found some unused GPU and CPU in the iphone somewhere... ;) It really does seem too good to be possible, but I guess we'll see.

This sure looks amazing - but too good to be true IMO. I don't think thiscan be rendered realtime with a free moving camera. Before I actual see a in game video I will remain sceptical.

Wowww.... noob. We're only GUESSING it's pre-rendered, not even know for sure. Geez... why don't you search yourself and read the whole post before judging others?
