Actually, you can tell the difference between MP3 and vinyl. If we're talking about lossless FLAC, generally not. The cracks and pops just give me a warm fuzzy feeling. :3
You need a good sound system though, on standard PC speakers or inexpensive headphones you probably wouldn't notice. Other than the cracks and pops obviously. I need to get myself some awesome speakers.
Sure, there's a nostalgia factor, but I can add digitally that with a sample of a needle drop and some looped dust crackle. You'd never know it wasn't wax.
See, now where was that when I was ripping my old vinyl 10 years ago? I had to hook a crappy old Onkyo up with a dull needle and then clean the results up in Sound Forge. I wish I'd kept my old Technics SL-12.
i only have a hand full of records iv manage to keep since my youth when we all had large record collection.. and tapes too for the car!! then being a teen i spent way more time in my car ( 1969 baja bug ) so my tape collection started to get larger. anyhow.. its funny the only records i manage to keep were the ones i hung on my wall as art. rush 2112, blues bother.. woodstock granted its several records.. and last but not least zepplen 4. no record player.. so yupp i just keep them as wall art! chris.
Dang, I when I first saw the thread title, I thought it was going to be about people with kinky vinyl fetishes, but you're all talking about records. I've got a stack of records - mostly 33s, some old 45s and 78s (kids records from my dad - the 78s might be plastic not vinyl I think...) The only ones anyone would care about are my Iron Maiden picture disc singles and my clear copy of Tool's Undertow. (With the spindle hole placed right where the cow's rectum should be. )
Actually, I have never heard about that. I opened the disc shortly after buying it, but never put it on a turntable.
I love vinyl - got over 600 records now (with some really good bootlegs, special pressings, etc.). Most of my at home listening is diverted to listening to my records. I still could never live without my iPod touch for the majority of my music listening needs - however listening to an mp3 album always seems to lose that almost cinematic feel that listening to a record can have.
0ooo just found another record i forgot i had.. "because i got high" came with a high time magazine. laughs.. chris.
You guys tempted me to break out my one crate of vinyl I have stashed. Lots of random picks here, +10 if you can name the two albums beside Kid A, and Thriller.
Can't say that I have ever seen those album covers before - but I am definitely interested to find out what they are?
From left to right: Aphex Twin - Girl/Boy Ep The Tuss - Rushup Edge Squarepusher - Welcome to Europe Lol that probably wasn't very fair, but you did say make it harder
I wouldn't have gotten any of those, but my inner geek recognizes the computer in the top left square as an Atari 65XE or 130XE (they used the same case) with a 1050 disk drive to the right (top) and an older 810 drive below it. Dunno what they keyboard is, but it's very familiar.
Roland SH-101, one of the greatest synths ever. If you've heard an electronic song sometime in the past 30 years it either had its sound somewhere in the mix or a synth emulating the SH-101
