Sandstorm and Nova are trailblazing games for a mobile phone, ripoffs or not.

For me, Sandstorm made the issue of whether the PSP has 1 or 2 analog sticks redundant... touch is the future for portable FPS.

They turned the idevice into a gaming platform. How much of a higher praise can I give.

Criticizing Gameloft for imitating other games, is like criticizing Stephen King for writing a vampire novel (Salem's Lot for those who don't know which book I'm talking about.)

Without exception, there's very little creativity in any of the arts. Look at all the remakes coming out of Hollywood, all the sound alike bands, webcomics that all blur into one. Yet the most successful products are ones we recognize at some level.

If Gameloft's games were only medicore, or just plain bad, we wouldn't have threads like this. The fact they're successful has as much to do with the quality they put into them as it does the games that inspired them.

They should really stop with those shameless ripoffs. I mean, there's obviously talented people working there so put them to make cool, creative stuff instead of basically stealing the look, gameplay and names of other games.

Well it seems a lot of people like to buy these 'shameless ripoffs'. I don't mind them copying ideas of a game because in my view, Gameloft is a respectable developer which has quality titles and a lot of polish is put in them. Though it would be nice to see them create games with their own ideas; I guess they're smart because what they are doing is that they take a popular genre/game on other consoles and are making their own version of it. These games have been a hit with the public so why not bring them over to the iPhone and make some cash out of it. It's not like they are giving us cheap and poorly made games.

    +1

When I first saw Dungeon Hunter running on my phone it reminded me of Diablo 3. Yes, 3. In stylish sense, the background looks so strikingly similar to that of Diablo 3's dungeon stage. The fact that it reminded me something this BIG is a very positive sign.

I can't really comment on the originality of their games cause seriously, all those genres have been redone again again and again... If they only develop and publish say one or two QUALITY games in a year (think sandstorm and dungeon hunter) who would accuse them of cloning other people's work? The way I see people having this sort of mentality is Gameloft outputs way too many games in a short time frame.

The only reason I hate Gameloft is... they make my purse bleed. Lots.

    xD

Edit: And FFS we are paying less than 10 bucks for all these games they developed. Don't you think it's a very blessed thing to be a iDevice gamer? xD (if only my iPhone's batt can last this long, though this is another story :p)

Hey Square, saw your reply and figured I at least owe you a response:) Let me preface by saying that I've been a customer of gameloft since hero of sparta. Sure it was a terribly animated, yet graphically stellar clone of god of war, but at the time I said "oh neat, they got god of war to run on a cell phone". And I continued on this trend up until around gangstar was released. At this time I started to notice that "no I didn't have god of war on my phone" I had a very bland, generic, and ultimately not fun version of one of my favorite games. I don't just like God of war for the "pretty graphics". I like it for the depth of character, and the genuinely entertaining storyline. Further more I loved the character Kratos. Has any gameloft game brought such an endearing experience? I don't feel they do. They may share the same game play elements as the greats, but they lack the depth 10 fold. Sure these games are cheap, but I feel they're deprived of some of the very basic elements that make great games great. I haven't played Dungeon hunter so perhaps it was wrong of me to prejudge the game, however after recently forking out 7 bucks for modern combat on the basis of "well I'm talking a lot of shit, and I haven't even tried they're "best" game", I found the same bland and unexciting universe gameloft has so masterfully created in the past. I feel the amount of praise they're getting for this "junk" is repugnant and unwarranted. As I have said in the past, I do see gamelofts potential in such games as castle of magic, and the like, but their so called "premium games" I feel are grossly overrated and severly deficient. So I guess it boils down, to I feel the praise is better deserved elsewhere on the app store.

I feel I have expressed my point the best I can, at this time and as such will try and cause no further unprovoked gameloft drama:)

So.. You don't think the ability to play your own playlist in the car radio is adding to the formula?

I agree on Hero of Sparta: in fact, my reaction was similar to yours -- at first I was terribly impressed, then I started getting a kind of "floaty" feeling about it (like the character was not inhabiting a physical space), then I just got bored with it. It didn't help that I started replaying God of War on the PSP around the same time, and it was just clear how deficient HoS actually is.

The thing is, people look for different things in games, and I've come to accept that the kind of flash that Gameloft offers is very popular (and draws a lot of "best game ever" comments). At this point I just ignore that kind of mindless praise. And as a game consumer I've decided to take their games in a case-by-case basis: if there's something that appeals to me in the gameplay or graphics, I'll pick it up and enjoy it for what it is (for example, I can enjoy MC:S as the best approximation of a FPS on the platform -- certainly not for its story).

But the thing is, my last two Gameloft purchases actually caught me by surprise. I found Blades of Fury to be really fun in its own right, not just as a recreation of an existing property. And Dungeon Hunter, well -- I have a soft spot for action RPGs, and it just feels like a real-to-goodness honest effort, not just a cash-in. (As an aside, as a lapsed tennis player/fan, I also happen to like Real Tennis 2009.).

I guess I tend to bristle at strict categorical thinking, and I try not use a gamer's particular preference to judge their overall taste (with the exception of Samurai -- anyone who doesn't like that game is a rube ;)).

At the same time, anyone who's saving their pennies for the next Gameloft effort while ignoring awesome games from other developers is very much missing out.

Yeah, I suppose I forget that a good majority of TA's populace is under the age of 15:) I really shouldn't let it get to me. I myself, used to love getting down on some diablo, however I'm very much jaded on this publisher/developer.
