I check ratings & reviews first. I seldom download games below 4 star rating except I just want to see how bad it is. And the game should not have too many 1 star ratings, which mean the 5 star ones are faked.
On iOS, I like games that I can hop in and out of very easily. So I tend to stay away from large games with high production value and lots of features, simply because they tend to take longer to get into at first, and become *too* immersive later on. So basically the type of games I play on iOS are the exact opposite of what I'd play on consoles.

No IAPs! Or if you do have them, they're not for consumables and they're reasonably priced. If you have unlockables, then they should be possible to achieve and not require grinding or IAP. And I avoid freemium and social games like the plague. No ads spoiling the game screen, distracting me from game play. No record of screwing over your users and adding ads in, or drastically changing game play, after they buy. Good graphics, interesting storyline, and looks to be fun to play. No crashing or decent fixes with good developer support in a reasonable amount of time. If the developer has a track record with the above, then I'm more likely to insta-buy.
I love only adventure games, so adventure is my first priority before downloading any game. Speed racer the game
My top three: No freemium or IAP games - I don't like knowing that I might have to buy more to continue the game. Fun gameplay - graphics don't matter as much as long as they aren't unbearable.. for me it is more about the gameplay. I like short levels rather than long epic battles. Good app store reviews - Since most games are only a dollar or two, I don't normally google the game first to see what kind of reviews it got outside of the app store
uhhh... good app store reviews... wow... You do realize some could be fake shill ones and some could give 1 star over a small problem. there's no trusting in App Store reviews...
Thanks for your feedback, Im looking for info on how to make my game GREAT (Save the Monster is out soon) yes, I also disagree with IAPs. They are good on games/apps where they are NEEDED or belong. But hate it when you NEED to buys stuff in game to move forward with the game! Thats a good point about being able to play for just a few minutes. Thats something I have built into Save the Monster, as I tend to play games that are more like that. Ill post my music on youtube this week, and see what you think of it, it gives off a good vibe...I think!
Price is important yeh. 99c is the max I will pay for a game, lol so I wouldnt put an app on for more than that...unless it something like broken sword etc. where its obviously worth more. As for *Save the Monster* graphics, Ive tried to keep them simple, yet appealing (screen shots to follow at my Twitter and on here) Kinda ORIGINAL FinalFantasy type of colours/brightness, yet vector based animations. Thanks for your reply. I will check out them games to look at the unlockables. Ive played mega jump. basically you need to pay to get more levels = a big no no for me! Save the Monster is free to download the light version, and 99c for paid, but then free to play (both due for release this month). Ive tried to put a lot of personality into the hand drawn (in flash with a tablet pen) into the animations and voices. And plan to add more animations in updates, I like to keep a bit of humour in there especially with the voices! Ive not actually checked the size of the game. Im hoping its under 20mb (i think) so it will download over 3G not just over wifi. Keep a look out Thanks for your post
Hi AdColvin, Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately my game Save the Monster IS 2D, not 3D. (its 3D kind of, but the game only works on 2D playing "field") The points you made about beating highscore, moving on to next level, collecting extras on each level, they are all there. I will see what else I can include to make this more prominent. It is a Puzzle solving game, with a fun twist of an arcade game. Thanks
