The game is so gorgeous in every way and then you have this depressing tedious narrative that I guess is about this kids’ shitty life, impossible to really know with everyone speaking Charlie Brown Adult nonsense, and so far as I can tell you can’t skip them. They’re between every single level so far...Maybe it pans out into more but I don’t think I can keep playing it. Barak Well-Known Member Mar 13, 2010 230 4 18 Portland, OR #3 Barak, Sep 19, 2019 Not a huge puzzle game fan but I am enjoying this one except for the same reason as Notstickron... I will probably stick with it to the end, but the cutscenes are painful for multiple reasons. Morbus Iff Well-Known Member Sep 9, 2010 236 33 28 #4 Morbus Iff, Sep 19, 2019 I agree with @Barak and @Nonstickron about the cutscenes: they don't bother me as much as it did them, but they're certainly "ok?" as in "ok? why does this matter?" as opposed to "ok, they're only good, not great". It feels like they're going for some big poignant moment at the end, like so many games like this try to do but, so far, I got nothin'. What bugs me the most is the level selector. Based on what I see so far, I'm nearly finished the game already. If that's true, there's not a lot here. ste86uk Well-Known Member May 9, 2012 6,774 1,000 113 #5 ste86uk, Sep 19, 2019 So I guess the puzzle bit so far is ok but simple but games usually start that way. But yeh I’m wondering about those cutscenes too? They just seem like a waste of time so far they haven’t really shown me much and they just talk gibberish so no idea what they are for? MetaGonzo Well-Known Member May 7, 2009 1,459 271 83 #6 MetaGonzo, Sep 19, 2019 Wow; you’re not kidding about the cutscenes. Bad choice. A shame as I like the style. I’ll persevere for now, but later. Got a lot to get through! Morbus Iff Well-Known Member Sep 9, 2010 236 33 28 #7 Morbus Iff, Sep 19, 2019 Here's an interview which gives context to the cutscenes: https://www.cnet.com/news/where-cards-fall-lets-you-rethink-your-life-path-in-a-unique-apple-arcade-game/ In length-related news, it appears (based on the trailer and this interview, at least), that the first "page" of levels is just that: the first page. I thought I was almost done the game but it looks like I might have (speculation): three pages worth of levels. That's a good meatiness for me. Honki Well-Known Member Nov 6, 2011 61 0 6 #8 Honki, Sep 25, 2019 I liked the mechanics, but they have so much potential I feel they've been explored far too little. I wish they'd have cut the obnoxious, unbearably slow-moving story and instead focused on exploiting gameplay mechanics to the max. When they introduced the wind mechanics, I was getting my hopes up, but unfortunately that was it. There are 50 levels in total, I played 45 or so, but in the end I just couldn't be bothered to finish it. Not every game needs a "deep, emotional story". This is a perfect example for "less is more". edit: also, performance is really bad on my 6s Plus. It gets so hot after 3 minutes it's scary, and the battery drain is horrible. They fit the game just fine. I would have liked them to be in English but they are fine and don’t take anything away from the game. This is a 9/10 for me. andsoitgoes likes this.
