Why do most iPhone RPGs look like SNES games from the early 90s?

How great it would be if there was an iPhone RPG with iDracula quality graphics! Or how about Planescape Torment? That was a really nice 2D RPG.

I get what you're saying. Not necessarily full 3D graphics with ridiculous amounts of detail (cuz lets face it, any game that's 3D on a system weaker than a Wii looks like crap), but something that looks clean, polished, and detailed. Inotia 2, infuses modern graphics with pixel art, but I dunno, pixel art and RPGs kinda go hand in hand.

imo, the Fire Emblem series on the GBA had some of the best sprite animations (in the combat screens). If a developer combined that with a proper, turn-based (you know, Final Fantasy and the like) RPG, that would be awesome. I don't know why there are many more ARPGs than turn based ones. Turn based seems to make more sense on an idevice to me, but that's just my opinion.

Agreed. I traded my friend a GBA SP for one (that's all he asked for strangely) and I'm glad I did. Single handedly one of the greatest systems ever.

But on the other hand, I'm getting kind of tired of the top down arpg's in the style of Secret of Mana and Zelda. When Zenonia came out it was cool. When a TON of them followed, it got old. They really need to focus on 3d turn based RPG's, it's the only RPG territory really left unexplored. I don't think it's even been attempted yet. 3d third person turn based RPG's like FFIV remake and FFVII.

ROFL, maybe of your gaming! Trust me I feel the same way about N64... but games get better over time, the golden age of gaming is today, not yesterday... Playing NOVA on my iTouch (and soon iPhone), is the golden age of gaming..

    Exactly.

If Fallout 1 and 2 were ported to the iPhone, I'd be a happy camper.

I agree. I prefer turn based RPGs. They're easier, and less embarrassing to play while riding on a crowded train.

YES! That's EXACTLY what I've been saying since app store day 1! Why hasn't anyone done a homebrew port of it? The PocketPC has one already.

Well, I've played inotia 2 and seed, but personally,I prefer seed's graphics! Don't gt me wrong, inotia has great graphics, but the pixelraphics give
it that bit more charm imho.

Basically, RPGs that imitate the feeling of the golden days of snes RPGs, should have graphics that match!

I guess it depends on how hard it would be to port such a game. But if they were to resize the graphics to 480x320, and convert the code over, I bet Fallout 1 and 2 could run beautifully on an iPhone 3G and iPod 2G.

Why? Because most of them are just mobile phone ports of JRPGs/CRPGs initially created in Java.
You can tell when they force you to use a digital D-pad and digital buttons as that's a sign of lazy programming.
All they have to do is change the code a bit to account for the new screen resolution and the new digital d-pad and buttons and recompile.
But it looks like some are also ports of SegaCD classics (Vay and the upcoming Haunted Mansion) or just ports of SCUMMVM games (Secret of Monkey Island, Flight of the Amazon Queen).

C'mon folks, we saw the same thing when the Sony PSP was first released. Remember all those PS1 and PS2 RPG ports?
    Easy money.

Sprites > 3D models any day. There's a certain attention to detail that just can't be matched by 3D graphics.

    Case in point:

Though to be fair, that is above SNES level, and the iPhone version of Metal Slug is nowhere near as good quality either. But the case still stands, 2D is awesome!

2D graphics can be very awesome, and if most iPhone RPG sprites looked as good as your examples, I wouldn't have anything to complain about.

But, unfortunately, most iPhone RPG sprites tend to look like this...

    But at a lower resolution...

To be fair, most shotguns don't shoot explosions, but I see your point

Variety. Too many iPhone RPGs look like SNES games. It would be nice if more looked like the great PC games from the late 90s like Planescape Torment and Fallout 1.
