I honestly doubt any Mobil platforming device will become a threat to the iphone . To little to late. :)

The user interface of the Windows 7 Series looks like a big joke.
They wanted to be completely different and reached that goal.
But they totally forgot about that it has to be EASY to browse for games.
Everything I've seen so far looks like a hard try to be stylish with a total lack of usefulness.

While I doubt these Windows 7 phones will overtake iDevices in terms of gaming for a long while yet (if ever), its still great to see some new competition emerging since nGage 2.0 bit the dust. Samsung also seem to be making gaming a priority on their latest handsets (Bada), while Nokia's N900 is a pretty capable game's machine - They've even got Angry Birds on it!

the more competition, the better it is for us end-users :p
if microsoft bring out a better phone, apple will bring out an even better phone so this can only be great for us

yup, better be a consumer rather than a fanboy

The platform with the largest userbase will attract more developers, and more apps and more users in return

Iphone OS wins this userbase part, but 3 years down and the games are mostly still mediocre, that is for a platform that considers itself a GAEMEN one

Despite App Sotre having 160000 apps, the majority are utter toot. And if games can look like that in the picture, I would consider buying one. After all, I'm not a complete Apple suck-up! I'd keep my iPod Touch and have best of both :D

I can't find any quote from MS stating that the new OS will be able to import full XBox or 360 games to your phone... simply that certain XBLive titles will be cross platform. I could see the integration of your gamertag appealing to acheivement junkies looking to boost their score on the go... but most people won't care.

...And no real time multiplayer? Yeah. Total iPhone killer

It has and always will be about accessibilty. Apple has pretty much set the bar for how we get games, and they sat the bar pretty high. Win7 will probably not over throw the iDevice's, but it may give it some decent competition. I personally have never owned a Zune, so I dont know anything about the interface, or the likes. I dont know that Zune has never come close to beating out iTunes and iPods, so it will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

One advantage M$ has over apple is that it has a gaming division and game devs working for it.So if it wants it can bring out a quite a few console like games on it's device.Even if those games don't sell enough to earn a gud enough profit M$ would still churn out dozens of good quality expensive to make games every year to attract hardcore gamers. You can bet EA and gameloft will also develop for windows 7 platform to milk more money outta their games! And so will indie devs.So while companies like EA and gameloft and even quite a few indie devs will continue to attach more priority for iphone games they will also develop games for windows 7.But where M$ has a clear advantage is it's gaming division will be developing games exclusively for windows 7 phones and for some that w'll be the deciding factor-----------availability of tons of decent quality casual games( not as many as iphone but still quite a decent library) and a dozen good quality games developed exclusively by M$ each year.

Someone said M$ is always late to the party. but then they are the ones who always go home with the hot chicks!! So i won't count M$ out.Android is garbage for gaming and nokia is good for nothin.Sony has missed the boat.So if anyone could challenge the iphone (as far as mobile gaming is concerned),it...............
As far as i am concerned, this is good news.More competition is always good for consumers and will allow indie devs to make more money!

I doubt it'll have all that much effect on the iPhone. I mean wasn't Android and then the Palm Pre then the newer Androids meant to spell the end of the iPhone too? They haven't, and so it stands to reason that this won't either.

My number 1 question has to be what the performance would be like on these phones. I've heard MS uses DirectX9 for graphics and as such it has to be asked how well will that actually work in a mobile game? Not just in terms of game performance (i.e. framerate) but also in terms of power consumption. I mean the iPhone uses opengl es, which is a slimmed down version of opengl, designed specifically for mobile devices. And that still suffers from terrible battery life. The hardware specs aren't all that much better (if at all) so surely the battery life will take a huge hit running something as demanding as directx9 for a full on 3d game?

Nah, there are already phones that are better than the iPhone but this all means nothing. It's all about the apps and it's going to be incredibly difficult for anyone, including Microsoft, to do anything about that unless Apple really drop the ball on the hardware.

Basically, when it comes to 'smartphones' Apple is where Microsoft are with computers. Ironic really.

It makes no difference, GLES and D3D both do the same thing: translate from nice easy to understand data structures into whatever the 3D hardware registers need to draw triangles.

D3D could easily be less power hungry and faster. For example, the pre-3Gs iPhones have pretty pathetic vertex processing performance that is done on the CPU anyway. At least in D3D you transform them yourself and tell the hardware "don't bother processing the vertices, I'll handle it, they are already format you need to just draw the triangles". GLES doesn't even have a mechanism for this.

I wouldn't be so hasty as to write off the competition as a few other posters have, these guys (microsoft, sony, Nokia) are watching every move Apple make and (fingers crossed) are learning from every mistake and success Apple have and make. And the Zunes, psphones, Nokias, Badas, and indeed iPhones/iPod Touches, of the future are going to be all the better for it.
