You know, this is a PERFECT present to come with your ipad mini. The sd version is really crisp, and since the ipad mini doesn't have retina ipad, this version is perfect for the mini...
I noticed in the description it says that if you have a 4S and above you should get the HD version and if you have an iPhone 4 you should get the standard version. I'm confused, especially since the iPhone 4 has Retina, and I have the standard version (the .99 cents version) for my 4S and it looks like it is full Retina to me. Is there any difference between the two versions in terms of graphics for the 4S?
If you have an iphone only, I would recommend the sd version due to size. The sd is like 100 mb but the hd is getting close to 600 mb. The developer said the hd version on the iphone would have uncompressed textures or something. So probably only a little better. Wimp hd is big mostly because of the ipad retina graphics. I have both versions. Both have good graphics. If you have only an iphone, I would recommend the sd version.
If you didn't know, the standard version has full retina graphics for iPhone but doesn't have iPad retina graphics, while the HD version was initially iPad only and was then updated to universal. I'm guessing that "4S and above" comment is just there for the sake of being there, but really...the only people who need the HD version (I say that because uncompressed, it's 5 times the size of the standard version) are people with retina-enabled iPads.
Thanks Connector for the quick response. I've had the .99 cent version for a while now and didn't even consider getting the HD version because the graphics were already so good, but noticed in the game description to get the HD version if you have a 4S and above. The 'standard definition' version that is supposed to be for the iPhone 4 and below looks fantastic and simply has to be full Retina. I was just wondering if there was THAT much of a difference and if it was worth it if I got the HD version for my iPhone, but it sounds like sticking with the version I have is best.
Thanks Casket. Yeah, this is what I thought, but the game description threw me. Then again, if you look at Espgaluda II, the HD version very much so applies to both the iPad AND iPhone. I have the HD version for my 4S and it looks fantastic compared to the standard version. But I guess the difference is that the standard version of Wimp is full Retina, whereas the standard version of Espgaluda II is not. Bear with me gentlemen, learning every day here!
You do notice a bit of difference between the two, will keep the HD version on my iPad over the standard even though it takes up more space.
You've tried both the Standard and HD versions on your iPhone or just your iPad? I can imagine a difference between the Standard and HD on the iPad, for sure, but the difference between the two on the iPhone seems like it would be minimal.
Espgaluda II HD...man, even people with iPhone 4 need to do themselves a favor and get that over the standard version (even though there's some slowdown)...it makes a world of difference.
Totally. The HD Espgaluda II is impressive. It's not like playing Phoenix HD or anything, but it does make a big difference. It's hard to not play anything that isn't either HD or Retina at this point. Oh, and speaking of... Not to get off the subject of Wimp, but didn't you say that Metal Slug 3 was Retina? I guess it's just the fact that the game is so old, but after basking in the glory of Apocalypse Max's visuals, Metal Slug just looks washed out, even if it is Retina. Thoughts?
There's a filter in the options menu that needs turning off...don't recall what exactly it was, but yeah...it's absolutely crisp when you can see every single bloody pixel. By default, the game isn't retina enabled though.
Yeah, it's the Video Filtering. I turn it on and then turn it back off again, but I don't notice that much of a difference between the two. See, to me, the menu screens all look Retina, but the game itself doesn't. Maybe it is just because the game is so much older and wasn't originally made with Retina that it looks off to me. I guess my point is that the game wasn't re-done with Retina graphics...
Esp 2 hd and dodonpachi hd run different resolutions on the iphone between the sd and hd versions. So the hd is much better on the iphone 4s. However wimp sd and hd on the iphone runs at iphone retina. The textures are the thing that is different, so a slight difference. The sd iphone version looks wonderful, and you save close to 500 mb, so trust me, on any iphone I would recommend the sd version. However for esp 2 and dodonpachi, get the hd version for sure, the graphics are much better.
Yeah, I'm sticking with the SD version of Wimp. It's full Retina, which is enough for me. Now the only thing missing is HD Blissful Death, DeathSmiles and Bug Princess. CAVE, are you listening? I know it will never happen, but can you make it happen anyway?
Yeah, video filtering on is a little better but it is all personal preference. The menus are retina ipad but the game uses old graphics format of the original game so it isn't as sharp. This is a port of the original game which was not designed to be ipad retina. So they added the video filtering to try and make it look better.
And dodonpachi maximum with full screen ipad retina. That would be totally awesome. Probably would be the best cave game ever like this.
As mentioned, on an iPad. As not mentioned on a 3rd Gen. Some people won't care, but as I've noticed the difference its enough to make me delete the standard version for the HD one. its quite noticable to me to be honest.
