The ipad hd version runs at ipad retina, so there is a night and day difference int it vs the sd version. The hd version looks like an arcade game it is that good. For sure if you have a new ipad or ipad 4, get the hd version, it is wonderful. If you have an ipad 2 or ipad mini with limited disk space, the sd version is probably better due to the lack of retina ipad and disk space.
Connector, can you post screen shots of Wimp HD vs the SD version on your iPad 3? And if you have an iPhone can you post screen shots of the HD vs SD? I'm curious to see the difference. If not, no biggy.
Ok, I will load the sd version of wimp on my new ipad. The iphone, I can't do because I only have an iphone 4 with 8 gb, so to install wimp hd on that would require me to delete over 1.2 gb to install, and my iphone is fully loaded right now. I had one other game roll in the holl by chillingo that had an hd and sd version that did the same thing as wimp, both versions were ipad retina, just textures slightly different. Honestly, I couldn't tell hardly any difference. It did seem a little more realistic, but pretty much the same. Maybe someone else could post if they got space on their iphone 5 the hd and sd wimp screenshots, but I really doubt you will see all that much difference. But I will post 2 screenshots of the hd and sd version on my new ipad for your viewing pleasure. Until then, I was a beta tester for Wimp, 5 of my recommendations including adding ipad retina, making controls more moveable, make the back icon a circle, adding reflections to the icon, and adding the joystick options to the pause menu; were suggestions of mine that got put into this game!!! One curious bug before that is long gone, was making Wimp Fly, I was the first to document it, so look at the screenshots below: swipe left and right to see all 6 pictures, and yes, this is the ipad retina hd version. https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=AA2FF02C15E8BE2F!130&authkey=!ANlz_qohXMC0PXw
The iPad comparison would be great. I just want to see if I can see the difference. Thanks Connector.
Sumosplash, looking at those attached files doesn't really do it justice since you can't see it full screen and it is compressed. So I put the two files on my skydrive, scroll left right and hit the see original button to see the full screen file. You will notice quite a difference. Remember to look at them on a big screen, and look at the view original file option. https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=AA2FF02C15E8BE2F!175&authkey=!ALicKGtfOXRuITw You or others notice a difference?
I see a slight difference between these two screen shots. The SD looks slightly more washed out, slightly less clear, but not that big of a difference at all. Hmmm... I think I need to see them in motion. -Edit- Now that I have them side by side from your Skydrive, yes, I can see a difference. I zoomed in specifically to the blue tube in the center of the shot. The vines hanging around it are clearly more defined in the HD version. And when I zoom in on Wimp himself, the colors are richer and more defined. Ultimately though, I don't think my 4S would really bring out the kind of definition that your iPad 3 is showing. I can see the HD as looking better than the SD on the 4S, but not the difference shown here.
Yeah on the new ipad, the hd version is running at ipad retina, whereas the sd version is running in ipad 2 resolution. So there is substantial difference cause the resolution is doubled. On the iphone, both the hd and sd version run the same resolution iphone retina, but the hd versions use uncompressed textures, the sd version uses compressed textures. So the benefit is very small. Wish I could show you on my iphone 4, but I only got 8 gb. But trust me, it is not that much of a difference.
As connector already mentioned, it'd only be worth it if you had an iPad 3rd or 4th gen due to the higher resolution. Or, if you enjoyed the game and wanted to support the dev.
There is an update available that claims it is for small bug fixes. I'm concerned they are adding ads, so I'm hesitant to download. Anyone downloaded yet? I'm running the HD version.
I just played the game for a couple of minutes after updating it, no ads here (SD version). It's safe to update.
This game is AWESOME! People on the App Store reviews whining and giving 1 star simply because they added optional paid DLC irritate me to no end. This game is exceptionally charming and well-polished and I love it.
Welcome to the wonderful world of iOS... I swear, if a developer released a 10-hour game for a quarter and then added 50 hours of gameplay for a nickel, people would still be reaching for their pitchforks... With all the actual problems of post-paid IAP nerfing, Paid-to-FTP switches, adding ads to paid games, etc., you'd think people would get their priorities straight... DBC
