It is actually creative, a paper shredder icon to show the numbers passing the machine and displaying free as the price, very ingenious! The colors also compliment the overall icon, making it more appealing in the AppStore. Would instantly buy it, no questions asked.
I'm dealing with colors because of my school so i can try to help you(even though it's my first year.) My complain can be about 1.99 price tag and background's color. Red and yellow are close colors so you should use contrast colors so you can easily seperate them. I would use green as 1.99 price tag and red for it's background. Green represents the money and red represents the danger of that price because it can be bought for free thanks to the app. For the free tag i would recommend to use background as red so it looks like same app has discounted. Right now they look like different app. You can keep the free as white.
The icon looks beautiful enough! It has so much depth to it and it will look great on a iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4G, and a iPad 2G cause of it's retina display, but the thing I don't get is why does $1.99 shred into free? Maybe a different idea than a shredder?
Icon Update Here is an updated version of the icon! Note that it´s the Apps that goes through the machine, not only the price. The app name will make that instantly logical. Thanks so far !!
Its getting there! Actually, I just knew the icon is supposed to be like a shredder. I thought it was some sort of Rolodex. Anyway, new choice of colors make it more clearer and I like the white on blue and new font for the FREE! sign. Hmm, just some critique or observation, take it or avoid it, again, just my 2 cents. How about maybe making the thickness of the 'paper' or 'boards' lower... and, not sure about this idea, put the prices in less orderly manner, like sideways, so there's at least two prices and hint of the prices saying 1.99 and 2.99... so its like from negative a.k.a prizes and not orderly, to positive a.k.a free and blue I'm sorry if it doesn't make much sense, i'll post more suggestions if something pops up in my mind... LOL Edit: This idea just came up to me, why don't you try using the actual price tag icons on the AppStore (when viewing with iPhone), and this was somethingggg like what i had in mind with the pricetag placements.. of course it won't be as ugly as my composite but I hope any feedback somewhat helps.
It's a slick looking icon IMHO, however it's not very intuitive. If I didn't already know what the app does, I wouldn't be able to figure it out just by glancing at the icon.
Latest icon update: Moved arrow to state direction more clear Slightly smaller paid icons A little taller mid-frame
The icons are ok but I dunno if it says about the scope of your application. It's also an application that shows games on sale so it should be more like: Normal -> Sale! -> FREE!! 1.99$ 0.99 0 Also these price tags are usually used in USA so you wouldn't catch the eye of people abroad.
I think the fonts for both the price and "FREE" should be the same, otherwise it doesn't quite match. Other than this, it looks great to me.
I think the last iteration of the icon looks good. Is there any way to make the shredder machine look better? Or maybe you could show some left over as well, highlighting the fact that the one you're showing are the free ones? Eric
I think that the 2.99 should have a slash through it to make it seem like the price went down to free. This would convey the message better that this is a sale finding app. Other than that the icon looks awesome!
I think the ideas is good for conveying the idea that the apps are going down in price to become free, but, I think first of all the top part should have the $2.99 tag in front falling and the $1.99 tag becoming visible in back of it. The grey part would be shiny chrome colored, the price tags on top would have blue background and the money amounts would be bright yellow, while the bottom part would have the 'free' part in bright red with a green background. Then have black arrows pointing down on the chrome part showing that the prices are going down, down, then becoming FREE! Possibly some white lines going outwards around the free part showing kinda' like, WOW! Since the real icon will obviously be small, that would be a catchy look IMO.
hmm... I like bem69's colors for the tags (matching the app store's colors) because they fit the app's purpose of tracking app prices. I also like how the tags are sideways. Not sure how to explain my preference for the sideways tags :/ rodrighezalex also brings up a good point about the $ and how that wouldn't make sense if it's universal. I guess this can't really be avoided, but it is something to think about... The arrow in the middle instead of on the top is an improvement, though. Definitely getting better.
It looks great. Basically it shows a price dropping to free. It should catch people's eyes easily. Very creative. I'll download it when it comes out.
You have the exact problem I'm having, I'm not sure how to portray the sideways tags.. I have the idea in my head but not really sure how to execute the tag layout LOL.
