woah! Looks like XCom's having a baby! EDIT: Oh... Got to the end of the video to see "Free." Excitement = 0
This is an amazing description. Well, actually more like 1 or 2 years because they used to do great premium games
Gameloft use to be good but it seems all the good companies get purchased or just follow the others in the end. Captain America is the first game I've purchased in a long time from gameloft and excusing the bugs I like it, they have the ability to make blockbuster games but ruin it with the implementation I think. As for game insight although they love their free games they aren't actually that bad, the tribez and tribez +castlez is pretty good and fair...although no building rotation in a village building game??
Here is a new video for the game from gamescom: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evrCgxg2Dls Looks really nice to me. And there is also a new game site with updatable database and quadrocopter contest http://x-mercs.com/
It surely seems very very interesting BUT unfortunately it will be freemium ... http://x-mercs.com/forum/rubric/Game/p/6746 XCOM is not freemium, why this has to be?? Oh well...
Freemium is not always a bad thing. Some gameplay mechanics works pretty well with that distribution model. I suppose turn-based tactics is one of them.
I don't really see a point in releasing an xcom clone at this point in time maybe in 2011 when there was nothing like it on the appstore it may have worked,Why would I buy a clone if I have the original.there's nothing here that looks interesting the graphics specially look outdated, low poly models, poor lightning and god awful particle effects reminiscent oflpc games from 90's era they should either update their engine or pickup cryengine or ue4 or something. If you're going to clone then do it properly atleast.
We don't know how they will apply the IAPs but I believe it will have some sort of timers and you have to wait or you have to replay the same levels over and over again to gain enough xp / better stats so that you can continue without giving real money. If it will be freemium I believe that the core gameplay will be altered due to IAPs.
I bet if your characters die you have to wait up or pay up for their instant recovery. "Oh noes my sniper died! He'll be in the infirmary for 2 weeks! Good thing i have $15 to revive him."
There will be timers definitely, I think. But in metagame, not in actual missions. There were timers in XCOM for soldiers to heal, and we were waiting for them to recover after missions. These timer are fine for me. And there will be a PvP mode, where we will be able to get some resources and other things. Anyway, the game will be free to download and try, and if it will be good, there is nothing bad to wait a bit or to pay.
New gameplay only teaser video. Looks cool and with nice music. http://youtu.be/_GFGX_CETXY P.S. Why can't I put here a working link?
